Addie DarlingADDIE DARLING, 1958-60

Married: Nov. 25, 1960 making her ineligible to continue as Golden Girl

Died: February 1961 of a cerebral hemorrhage

Historical highlight: A hula dance Addie did with the band at a Notre Dame game caught the eye of a TV cameraman, was broadcast coast to coast and her "wiggle" started tongues wagging. Headlines ranged from "Twirls vs. Wiggles" and "Golden Girl Wiggle Has Campus Buzzing" to "Hip Hip Hooray." Everyone wondered if Addie , now that she has wiggled in South Bend, would be allowed to wiggle in Ross-Ade Stadium. Would President Hovde let her?

"Well," Hovde said, "some people can wiggle well, and I guess if they can do something good, they should be allowed to do it."

John Norberg, author of "Hail Purdue," the band department's history book, says "the wiggle controversy did more to give the Golden Girl national fame than any single incident before or after."
