Home: Kettering, OH
Current occupation: Student pursuing a master's in sports psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology
Past jobs/life situations that have contributed to the richness of my life: For five summers I worked for the Fred J. Miller summer clinics, a family-owned performance camp. This family and its staff showed passion and caring for the marching band activity and made the camp staff share their love and passion with nearly 3,000 students a year. The skills and work ethic I learned there influenced my future educational plans with sports psychology.
Hobbies/passions that I enjoy: This past winter I enjoyed working with the Concord Blue Devils Winter Guard. Helping young men and women with their performance level and technical skills was a wonderful opportunity. The joy of spending time with talented and ambitious youth brought back wonderful performing memories of my own. The icing on the cake was putting silver medals around their necks at the Winter Guard International Competition in April.
Still involved in twirling? Yes, through the Fred J. Miller camps mentioned above.
What made/makes the Golden Girl position so special: The best word to describe what makes being a Golden Girl so special is tradition handed down from Golden Girl to Golden Girl. Seeing the fans excitement as the marching band takes the field led by the Golden Girl is breath taking. A sense of accomplishment that I can say I was the Golden Girl at Purdue University. The great memories of the hundreds of performances for millions of people are cherished memories I will never forget.
How being Golden Girl has shaped/impacted my life beyond Purdue: Since I am in sports psychology experiences and have worked for five years at summer caps, I am a role model for others, and I can talk to a large group of people with confidence and ease. In work, school or just life come about, I can smile, take a deep breath and relax myself and others around me. There are disappointments in life, but my experiences as Golden Girl made me more prepared to accept things, adopt the changes and make the best of everything. I always remember to look forward, not back.
Favorite memories from being Golden Girl: The Rose Bowl - everything about it! The pep rally with thousands of people in black and gold, marching down Colorado Boulevard in front of millions of people, hearing the marching band play "I Am An American" at one of the most famous stadiums in the world, seeing my mom, dad, grandparents, brother, aunt and uncle all there to cheer me and the marching band, on. At Michigan State my parents told me they were in the fifth row by the band. For the whole first half I searched and searched for them. In the second quarter, for some reason, I looked up to the third tier and there were my parents and half the section waving their arms like crazy to get my attention. At every single performance I found my parents in the stands, even if they were in the third tier.
