Summer Training
During the summer months, select cadets who will beginning their third or fourth year in ROTC can attend one of the the many schools that the US Army has to offer. Amoung these schools are Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare, Northern Warfare, Cadet Troop Leadership Training (CTLT), and Operation Robin Sage. Cadets who will be beginning their fourth year are required to attend the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) in Ft. Lewis, WA. The content below describes these opportunities more in depth.
Airborne School
Cadets who are selected for the Basic Airborne Course (BAC) will attend three weeks of training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Students learn how to conduct "static line" Airborne operations by going to through three phases of training - Ground, Tower, and Jump week. Ground Week familiarizes the student with movement inside the aircraft, practicing landings on the Lateral Drift Apparatus, and jumps from a 34' tower. In Tower Week students learn how to conduct mass exits from an aircraft from the 34' tower and how to properly land by practicing on the Swing Landing Trainer and the 250' tower. During jump week, students are required to make five jumps from a C-130 or C-141 aircraft. The jumps include three without combat equipment, one combat equipment, and one night jump with combat equipment. Upon successful completion of these requirements, the wear of the US Army basic parachutist badge is authorized.
Air Assault School
Air Assault School is a tough 10 1/2 day course that teaches Air Assault techniques and procedures, and qualifies soldiers to wear the Air Assault Badge. The school is broken-up into 3 phases which are combat assault, slingload operations, and the rappelling phase. Soldiers are in processed and are administered a pre-requisite test. This test includes the negotiation of a 9 obstacle course, followed by a 2 mile run. After the entry test, soldiers progress into the three phases. Before transitioning to another phase, a written and hands-on test must be passed. Soldiers learn skills that include slingloading equipment to aircraft, rappelling from a UH-60 or CH-47 helicopter, and combat assault operations. The school culminates in a 12 mile foot march that must be completed in under three hours in order to graduate.
Operation Robin Sage
Robin Sage gives cadets the chance to participate in phase IV of Special Forces training. It takes place at Camp Mackall. Cadets will spend 14 days in the field acting as the indigenous peoples suffering from an oppressive regime. The Special Forces job is to train the guerillas (who are played as cadets) in simple tactics involving unconventional warfare. You will be given classes on everything from Operations orders to how to stay alive in the field with minimal needs. This type of training is excellent for people interested in learning about Special Forces, how they train, and simple field training with applications.
