Minimum Qualifications

Standardized minimum qualifications have been established for advising positions and are detailed below. 

Academic Advisor

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position or must possess an appropriate combination of educational credentials and related work experience.
  • One year of relevant work experience required. Experience with student advising preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to collaborate with faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Basic skills in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University preferred. 

Senior Academic Advisor

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position or must possess an appropriate combination of educational credentials and related work experience.
  • Three years of academic advising or student services experience required. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to collaborate with faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Knowledge of academic advising required. Demonstrated ability to interpret and administer academic policy as necessary.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and establish priorities, and resolve conflict.
  • Basic skills in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University preferred. 

Assistant/Associate Director

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position or must possess an appropriate combination of educational credentials and related work experience.
  • Four years of academic advising or student services experience required. Demonstrated leadership experience in academic advising or student services also required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to lead collaborative groups of faculty, staff, students and parents.
  • Excellent leadership, supervisory, planning, problem-solving, organizational, project management and customer support skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends and communicate impact.
  • Basic skills in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University preferred.

Director

  • Must have an earned graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position.
  • Five years of academic advising or student services with demonstrated progression of experience required. One year of supervisory experience necessary. Experience leading initiatives required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to establish vision and develop implementation plans to achieve results. 
  • Excellent leadership, supervisory, planning, problem-solving, organizational, project management skills required. Budget planning and administration skills essential.
  • Must be able to make presentations to collaborative groups of faculty, staff, students, and parents and successfully administer student services and academic success programs.
  • Ability to analyze data and set direction for necessary changes.
  • Basic skills in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Knowledge of programs and majors at Purdue University preferred.
