University Academic Advising Assessment Team Update
By Susan Aufderheide
I would like to thank to all members of the 2009-10 University Academic Advising Assessment Team for their leadership in preparing for the accreditation visit last spring. A special thanks to those team members who will no longer be serving this year: W. L. Mills, Linda Conner, Truda Strange, Tiffany Mousel, Janet Proctor, and Kay Solomon. The accreditation team was impressed with our ability to assess advising in a way similar to how academic departments assess their programs. I would also like to thank the advising community for being an active participant in the entire assessment process by administering the advising survey, student quiz, and CODO-in survey.
While accreditation is behind us, assessment continues. The CODO-in survey is administered year-round. We will be administering the advising survey again during spring 2011. Assessment of advising should be something we think about every day. How are we doing in helping our students achieve the student learning outcomes our campus has established for academic advising? Tiffany Mousel said it best in her 2008 article in Advising Matters:
The assessment process gives us an opportunity to reflect on our core values, mission, and responsibilities. It also allows us to find out what’s working and what students believe to be most helpful, pertinent, and inspiring. Finally, it allows us, as a vital part of the student experience, to engage in intellectual renewal, to have a say in what academic advisors do (or should do) on a daily basis, and to start talking – amongst ourselves – regarding the future of academic advising at Purdue.
During the fall 2010 semester the University Academic Advising Assessment team will prepare the advising survey, and focus on developing an appropriate direct measure and accompanying rubric of our student learning outcomes for individual advisors to use in implementing the measure. It is our hope to have such a tool in place for the fall 2011 registration meetings.
As members of the advising community, you can continue to monitor the activities of our committee by viewing our links on the Academic Advisors Resource Guide. Thank you in advance for continuing to administer the CODO-in survey and for administering our soon-to-be developed direct measure.
