Advisor Interview: Karen Hail, College of Education
In August, Karen Hail, a new advisor in the College of Education, met with Janet Robinson to share some information about herself.
How long have you been an academic advisor at Purdue?
On September 10th it will be three months!
What were you doing before this job?
For the past three years I have worked as a middle school guidance counselor in Tippecanoe County. Prior to returning to grad school, I taught 7th grade World Geography in Colorado.
What drew you to this kind of work?
I love meeting new people and giving them tools they can use to solve their own problems.
What have you found to be most enjoyable or most surprising about your job so far?
I really enjoy the women in my office! Now that the students are back, I am excited to meet each one of them too!
Well, once the semester is under way, I’m sure you’ll be meeting LOTS of students! It’s easy to see your enthusiasm in the way your face lights up when you talk about work and your students. I’m sure your students will pick up on that!
Karen, it’s always fun to know more about each other personally, so let’s move away from professional questions to more personal ones.
Are you new to the Greater Lafayette area? If so, where did you live before?
We have called Lafayette home for four years now. Before that we lived in Bloomington while I finished my Master’s degree.
What do you do for fun?
I like to spend time with my husband, read, nap, hike, camp and travel.
How do you stay fit and healthy—physically, mentally, emotionally?
Physically, I am a work in progress. Mentally and emotionally, I stay fit by attending church and serving others. Helping those with less always helps me feel more grateful for the many blessings I do have!
Is there any particular place you’ve always wanted to visit?
I went to Italy once and I am ready to go back! My mother’s family is from Northern Italy so I want to visit this region.
Do you have any start-of-the-school-year or starting-new-job resolutions?
- Trying to keep a balance between work and life.
- Leaving work at work.
Do you have a favorite story about yourself you’d like to share?
When I was in third grade my friends and I found a fossil while digging on school grounds during recess. Our picture was on the front page of the paper! And so my love of geography began. . . .
Love it! What a cool story, Karen. Thanks for sharing, and welcome to PACADA!
