Glossary of Purdue Terms

This glossary defines common Purdue terms as well as the specific jargon of Purdue academic advisors.

Academic Progress Report (APR) – Also known as a bingo sheet, the academic progress report, issued each semester, plots the coursework a student has completed in grid format.

Admitted students – Beginning students who have been accepted by Purdue.

Ambassadors – Student groups involved in recruitment for the University or a certain school.

Bingo sheet – Informal name for the Academic Progress Report. It plots students' academic progress in grid format. The student receives a bingo sheet each semester of enrollment.

Boiler Connection – Available through the Student Services Information Network (SSINFO), the service provides information on many topics of interest.

Boilermaker – This nickname for Purdue student-athletes originated in 1891. Purdue coaches were accused of hiring several husky Monon Railroad workers to play football, prompting a Crawfordsville newspaperman to call the team "Boiler Makers." In October 1892 The Purdue Exponent gave the name its stamp of approval.

Boilermaker Special – This unique locomotive, maintained by the Reamer Club, is the official University mascot.

Callout – An introductory meeting sponsored by a student club or activity to attract new members. Students attend callouts to find out about a group that they may want to join.

Cancellation run – Computer process by which the Registrar cancels the registration of all students who have not paid their fees by the deadline.

Candidate for Graduation – A student who is eligible to graduate but must complete the current semester's coursework to receive the degree.

CODO – Change of Degree Objective. To change from one school to another at Purdue, a student must fill out a Change of Degree Objective form.

Co-op – Cooperative housing. Co-ops are small housing units for students, who save money by managing all aspects of house operation from meal planning to maintenance and improvements.

Co-oping – Participation in Purdue's Cooperative Education Program, in which students alternate semesters of study with semesters of work related to their majors. Students gain experience, which helps them land a job after graduation, and earn money, which helps with college expenses.

Co-Rec – Nickname for the Recreational Sports Center, which offers gymnasium facilities to students and staff.

Debris – The Purdue yearbook.

Directed Credit –

Drop/Add – The process of revising student schedules after registration. Academic advisors assist students in dropping and adding classes from their schedules. Advisors or the Office of the Registrar process schedule revisions.

EE – (pronounced ‘Double E') Common name for the Electrical Engineering Building.

ENAD – (pronounced ‘E-Nad') Common name for the Engineering Administration Building.

Exponent, The – Purdue's independent student newspaper, published by Purdue students and distributed free at many locations on campus.

Heave – Common name for Heavilon Hall.

Information label – Issued by the Office of Admissions for each admitted student. Provides advisors with personal and academic information about students entering their schools.

ITaP - Information Technology at Purdue. Central computing and telecommunications systems on the West Lafayette campus.

Mortar Board – Calendar published each fall by the Mortar Board Honor Society. Lists important Purdue events, holidays, library hours, etc. It is sold at most stores near campus.

Name raise – At the request of a student who wants to join a closed class or section, professors may override the official maximum number of students allowed in their classes through a name raise.

Oversubscribed – The computer system lists classes that have been filled as "oversubscribed" or "awaiting space."

Petition – To be considered for an office or leadership position, the student fills out an application known as a petition.

PRHC – Purdue Residence Hall Council, coordinating body for all 12 residence halls, includes the president or governor from each hall, student representatives, and hall managers.

PSG – The Purdue Student Government addresses student concerns and coordinates various student activities through its many departments.

 

PUID – The student identification card used as a residence hall identification and meal card. They also allow the holder to check out items from the library; cash checks; purchase Convocations and theater tickets; ride the CityBus system for free; and receive discounts and privileges for Purdue students only. Students should carry their PUID at all times.

RESS – Registrar Subscription System.

SITP – Student Information System. Advisors may view student transcripts through screen 3, Academic Record Inquiry, on this system.

SSINFO – (pronounced ‘S-S-info') SSINFO is a computer information system available 24 hours a day and accessible through any PUCC terminal.

TA – Teaching assistant, a graduate student who instructs a class or assists a professor with a class.

THOR – The computerized library catalog, THe Online Resource.

Transfer Credit Evaluation Report – Purdue evaluation of credits earned at other universities. The Department of Credit Evaluation in the Office of Admissions does the evaluation after receiving a transcript. This department decides how the University will accept and add the credit to the student's Purdue transcript. Each school or department must also evaluate how the transfer credit is applied to the student's major.
