Chinese 107 and 207

  • The sequence for heritage students is CHNS 107, CHNS 207, CHNS 301, and beyond.
  • CHNS 107 and 207 are open only to heritage speakers of Chinese.
  • CHNS 107 and 207 differ from ITAL and PTGS 105 in that completion of CHNS 107 and 207 does not qualify students to request credit for CHNS 101 or 201.

CHNS 107: Elementary Chinese for Heritage Students (4 credits)

  • Advisors may enroll any student who has learned some spoken Mandarin Chinese from the family.
  • Students may also take the placement test prior to enrolling in the course. Please refer to the Chinese placement policies.
  • Successful completion of CHNS 107 is equivalent to completing CHNS 102.

CHNS 207: Intermediate Chinese for Heritage Students (4 credits)

  • Students who have successfully completed CHNS 107 are eligible to take this course. 
  • Students who have not completed CHNS 107 may be admitted to CHNS 207 by taking the Chinese placement test. Please refer to the Chinese placement policies.
  • Successful completion of CHNS 207 is equivalent to completing CHNS 202.
  • Students placed into CHNS 207 who earn a grade of C or better may be awarded departmental credit for CHNS 107. Students must ask their academic advisor to request credit from Professors Wei Hong or Daniel Hsieh.
