Space Management and Academic Scheduling

Space Management and Academic Scheduling (SMAS) handles academic and event scheduling and assignment of space for the University. Each school's schedule deputy and curriculum deputy work with SMAS in planning the semester's schedule of classes. Before the beginning of each semester and throughout the registration process, school representatives meet with SMAS staff to discuss oversubscribed classes and the need for additional divisions. Academic advisors must keep the schedule deputy informed about problems with class size, seating, overcrowding, and the physical condition of classrooms.

SMAS requests reservations for class space and distributes them to the schedule deputies before building the semester schedule. Temporary (level 1) course reservations are removed on a scheduling run for fall semester classes in mid-July and on a scheduling run for spring semester classes in mid-November. All remaining course reservations (permanent) are removed on the first day of classes. Space becomes available in crowded classes on these dates, which may be found on the registrar's activity calendar. These dates are also available on the PACADA Web site.
