Advising Candidates for Graduation

Commencement

Students not registered for all coursework needed to complete the degree requirements in their final semester may not march in the commencement ceremony. Students who do not pass a course during the final semester but who are listed on the candidate roster may march in the commencement ceremony, but they will receive only the diploma cover, not the diploma.

Advisors may be asked to serve as marshals for the graduation ceremony. Marshals' duties include:

  • lining up the candidates in alphabetical order by school in the Armory;
  • leading the candidates into the Hall of Music, following the school's flag bearer;
  • assigning graduates a seat, 13 per row;
  • making certain no accessories are added to the mortarboards and gowns.

May and August processions move from the Armory to the steps entering Hovde Hall. December processions generally move through the basement of the Hall of Music, ascend the stairs to the main floor, and then enter the auditorium.

Many of the schools hold recognition receptions immediately following commencement.
