University
Residences
More
than 85 percent of first-year students live in
University
Residences, which is one of the largest residence
hall systems in the country.
Options
within University Residences
First-year students have a variety of
options to choose from low-rise halls, high-rise
halls, and apartments. Students also may choose
to live in single-gender halls, in which men and
women live in separate buildings; or coed halls,
in which men and women live in separate areas
of the same building and share lounges and public
spaces.
There are also options for students who prefer apartment-style housing or for married students with families. Visit the University Residences Web site to learn more.
Application
Process for 2009 Enrollment
Upon notification of admission to Purdue, students who want to live in University Residences may apply for housing online.
When applying for housing, students must submit a nonrefundable $100 housing application processing fee. March 1 is the preferential deadline for housing applications. After May 1, all students who have applied for housing will be assigned a random number to establish their order in the room assignment sequence. For these students, housing assignments will be communicated by early June. Students who apply for housing after May 1 will receive on-campus housing assignments if space remains available.
Mutual roommate requests will be honored if possible, as long as each student has signed a housing contract by May 1.
Costs
Costs for rooms vary depending on the style of housing and the meal plan selected. The most current costs are available online.
Cooperative
Housing
Members of cooperatives share costs and household
responsibilities, such as cleaning and preparing
meals, to maintain a comfortable living environment
and reduce living costs.
Greek
Housing
Most Greek organizations offer housing
and meal service for their members. Men's and
women's houses provide friendship, intramural
athletics, social activities, community service
opportunities, and academic support for their
members. Membership is lifelong, and alumni activities
are numerous at the national and local level.
Greek housing is open by invitation through 41
fraternities and 18 sororities. Houses average
between 80 and 110 residents. Greek rush is held
in the fall (sororities hold a formal rush; fraternity
rush is informal). Chapter members generally can
live at their sorority or fraternity house within
a year of joining.
Off-Campus
Housing
Most off-campus housing is within walking
distance. Because current students arrange their
housing early, you should begin your search two
or three months before moving. And if you prefer
not to cook, you can buy a meal plan from the
University.
The Office of the Dean of Students can help students find off-campus housing.
Campus Dining
On-campus dining is fantastic. Students have lots of choices and can even view menus online before deciding where to eat. Visit the University Residences Dining Services Web site to learn more.
