Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmission

The Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions composed of nine faculty members plus administration personnel from the Office of Admissions.

Faculty members, after nomination by the University Senate Nominating Committee and subsequent appointment by the president of the University, serve a three-year period on this committee.

No student at Purdue can be separated from the University for academic reasons without first being placed on academic notice. Grades earned from a summer session (modules 1, 2, 3) do not immediately affect a student's academic standing in relation to notice or being separated. Summer grades are factored into the cumulative index at the end of the next subsequent semester (fall/spring) of enrollment. However, a student can be separated at the end of a summer session for failing to meet academic stipulations applied by the committee as a condition of readmission to a summer session (modules 1, 2, 3).

After each regular semester, the Office of Admissions sends a letter to every student who has been separated. The letter explains the procedures required for readmission. It is the policy of the committee that a student separated for the first time remains out of Purdue for at least one semester. A student separated for the second time must remain out of Purdue for at least one year (i.e., two full semesters; summer session and other short-term enrollment periods do not count as full semesters). Exceptions to the minimum one semester or two semesters layout are generally made only for two reasons:

  1. If a student can graduate in one semester with 15 or fewer credit hours, or
  2. If there are extenuating circumstances that are extremely unusual and beyond a student's control.

Students should be instructed to use their time constructively during the layout period - i.e., employment and/or preferably taking course work at another institution. Math and Science courses are of particular interest to the members of the readmission review team. Every student placed on SEPARATED status should be informed that readmission is not automatic. Taking course work elsewhere and receiving a grade of C or better in each course is usually the best indication to the committee of one's commitment to return and earn a degree, but readmission is still not guaranteed.

Career testing and counseling are not required for readmission, but are available and may be arranged for any student who desires this assistance. The career tests given are the Strong Interest Inventory (SII), which compares the student's interests with employees and professionals in various occupational fields, and a personality test, like the Myers Briggs Indicator. The personality test helps the student to think about how their personality type might impact various career choices. Other tests may be assigned at the discretion of the counselor.

In instances where testing is requested, a summary of test results, including a recommendation from the Admissions counselor who has worked with the separated student, is included with the student's application for readmission.

The application, along with all supporting data - e.g. employer recommendation, courses taken and grades earned at another institution, the student's personal statement, academic record at Purdue, (and the summary of test results, if required) are then sent to the academic school to which the student is applying for readmission.

  • For a student separated once, in most schools/colleges a designated reviewer or committee in that school/college evaluates the application and supporting data and makes a recommendation to deny, table, or readmit. If the recommendation is to readmit, the application is returned to the Office of Admissions where a representative of the CSDR authorizes readmission. The student is then notified in writing of the committee's decision.

  • If the designated reviewer/committee recommends denial of the application, it is sent to the CSDR for review. The committee usually will support the actions of that school, unless there are extenuating circumstances that lead the committee to conclude the student should be readmitted to that school. If the recommendation to deny is upheld, then the committee will attempt to suggest other options to the student. Suggestions may include but are not limited to:

    • Complete course work elsewhere before applying again,

    • Obtain career counseling and submit career test results before applying again,

    • Confer with other academic schools at Purdue to explore alternate majors before applying again,

    • Complete your degree objective elsewhere.

  • For the applicant who has been separated twice, a designated reviewer or committee in the student's academic school/college of choice will evaluate the application and the supporting data and make a recommendation on the application for CSDR review. The CSDR will make a final decision about readmission.

The deadline dates for completed applications, encumbrance clearances, and application fee payments for specific academic sessions are:

  • Summer Session - April 1 (modules one, two, three)
  • Fall Semester - July 1
  • Spring Semester - November 1
  • Immediate Readmission - Thursday before classes begin

In general, the Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions will begin meeting several weeks prior to each deadline date. Meetings occur as needed until all applications that have been submitted on time for the designated readmission period are reviewed. Approximately 16 committee meetings are held each year. CSDR meetings are chaired by staff from the Office of Admissions. Admissions staff vote only in case of a tie. Committee meetings average approximately two hours.

Committee action almost always takes one of three forms:

  • Approved with the stipulations to register for no more than 15 credit hours (nine total credit hours in summer session) and earn no less than a 2.0 semester (2.0 summer) index;
  • Denied; OR
  • Tabled.

"Tabling" generally is taken when the designated school evaluator or the committee believes more information is necessary before a decision can be made. If a student is denied, reasons for denial are made clear to the student with suggestions for strengthening his/her case (e.g., take course work elsewhere, improve basic skills in math and reading or English, seek further counseling as to specific career objectives, etc.). The committee also has the option to recommend that the student complete a degree elsewhere.

A student who has been denied readmission by the committee may request that the committee review its decision. This review must be on the basis of additional relevant information not previously considered by the committee. The review can take one of two forms: (1) a review of written information submitted to the committee for further evaluation, or (2) a personal appearance of the student at a committee meeting.
  1. The University Senate establishes academic notice and separation status levels. The current levels can be found in University Regulations, Part 2, Section VIII.

  2. A student may not be separated from the University unless he/she has been on notice the previous semester or was admitted on notice the previous semester.

  3. Summer session grades do not immediately affect the academic notice or separation status of a student, except if the student has been readmitted for the summer session and does not meet the CSDR's stipulations. The student is separated again at the end of summer session if he/she fails to meet the stipulations placed on his/her readmission to summer session.

  4. A student on academic separation status is not eligible to enroll in any course at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Purdue University in Indianapolis, any Purdue University regional campus, or the Statewide Technology Program.

  5. Students who are separated from the University for the first time are required to stay out at least one semester. Students who are separated for the second time are required to stay out for at least one year (two full semesters; summer session (modules 1, 2, 3) and other short-term programs do not count as a semester). The CSDR can make exceptions to this policy for seniors who can complete degree requirements in one semester with 15 or fewer credit hours, as long as they have the support of their school. Also, students who have suffered unusual extenuating circumstances may petition for an exception. The CSDR must first review and approve valid pertinent information submitted by the student with unusual extenuating circumstances before an application is given to the student for completion. Students seeking an exception must submit an application no later than the Thursday before classes begin for the next semester or academic term. (7/14/03)

The CSDR also must first review and approve any request from a school/department at Purdue University to make an exception to the layout period for a student with more than 15 credit hours to graduate. (7/14/03)

  6. Students applying for readmission are required to pay a $100.00 readmission fee, which is non-refundable. Beginning with spring 2005 and thereafter, the readmission application fee will be $100.00 (also non-refundable).* Refunds will be considered for students who will be registered after readmission for eight or fewer credit hours to complete their degree on the regional campuses and students who will be registered after readmission for six or fewer credit hours to complete their degree on the West Lafayette campus. The Office of Admissions may also waive the readmission fee if there is sufficient evidence of economic hardship.

  7. Students must remove all University encumbrances by the application deadline of the semester or summer session for which they are seeking readmission and must pay the readmission fee by the application deadline.

  8. Students who are separated from the West Lafayette location may choose, after one semester lay-out, to apply for readmission at a Purdue regional campus and must adhere to the procedures established at that particular campus.

  9. A separated student from the West Lafayette campus who is readmitted as described in item 8 above in a Purdue program at a regional campus is eligible to apply for transfer to the West Lafayette under normal regional campus transfer procedures after she/he as successfully completed 12 credit hours with grades of C or better.

  10. All students readmitted are readmitted on academic notice, with the stipulations to register for no more than 15 credit hours (nine credit hours total for all summer modules) and earn no less than a 2.0 semester index.

  11. The Readmissions Committee has authorized the committee chair to act on behalf of the committee under the following circumstances:

    • When a student has a semester average of C or better the first semester after readmission and is separated again because of graduation index.

    • When a senior has been separated and needs no more than nine credit hours for summer sessions to graduate or no more than 15 credit hours for fall or spring to graduate, and has a favorable recommendation from the school from which she/he has been separated. It is understood that in any instance in which a school recommendation for readmission is not favorable, the application will not be acted upon by the CSDR.

    • When a student has been separated and has an incomplete grade from her/his last semester or academic session of enrollment that she/he can complete in a timely fashion - normally, before the beginning of the next semester or session. The course instructor must provide verification of the final grade in a timely fashion and the grade must raise the index (University graduation index and/or readmission semester stipulation) to the level where the student would be eligible to continue.

  12. The Dean of Students was granted approval by the Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions in 1969 to reclassify and permit register as temporary students former students who have been separated provided:

    • The Office of Admissions staff is convinced that the objective is for adult education only - no further degree objective.

    • The student is at least 21 years old.

    • The student will have been separated for at least a full year prior to registration.

    • The course load is limited to six hours or less.

    • The student is employed full-time or is a homemaker.

    • The student is a commuter.

  13. The Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions will review applications for students who graduated on academic separation status and want to enroll in additional undergraduate course work.

The Graduate School will decide whether a student who graduated on academic separation status may enroll in graduate courses. (2/11/86)

  14. The chair of the Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions may extend the readmission approval for a student. A newly readmitted student must enroll within one calendar year of committee action. Beyond that time the student shall file a new application for readmission. Another fee will be charged. (Reviewed and approved by the Educational Policy Committee, 10/30/89).

  15. All readmitted students enrolled in more than 15 credit hours fall or spring semesters (nine credits for summer session) will be notified by letter within the first four weeks of the semester (two weeks of summer session) that their registration exceeds the credit hour limit and will lead to academic separation status if it is not reduced. Readmitted students who, based on their grade report, exceed the 15 credit hour maximum stipulation will be separated again. On the basis of unusual circumstances, exceptions to the credit hour limitation can be made for extenuating circumstances by petitioning the chair of the committee.

  16. Members of the Committee on Scholastic Delinquencies and Readmissions voted to assign the readmission processing for non-degree students to the Office of Admissions. The director of admissions indicated that the following policies and procedures will be followed:

    • All non-degree students who are separated for the first time must observe a one semester layout;

    • A second readmission will not be considered;

    • No readmission application fee will be assessed for non-degree seeking students

Regional campuses include Purdue Northwest and Purdue University Fort Wayne. These campuses administer their own readmission procedure. Students should apply at the campus at which they wish to take classes.
Readmission applications for Purdue Polytechnic Statewide are handled by the West Lafayette campus according to Purdue West Lafayette readmission policies. Polytechnic Statewide programs should not be confused with regional campuses.
