Early Childhood Education and Exceptional Needs

Students complete a program that prepares them to apply for licensure in Indiana as Early Childhood Generalist and Exceptional Needs, teaching in pre-kindergarten through grade three. Students develop critical thinking abilities necessary for working with young children and their families. They develop skills for working with typically developing children as well as children with exceptional needs. Graduates are prepared to teach in inclusive preschool and primary classrooms and/or in classrooms serving children with exceptional needs. The program includes one full semester of student teaching.

Careers:

Students are prepared to teach in pre-kindergarten, primary and special education classrooms through grade three. Students are also prepared for certification as developmental therapists in the early intervention system (birth to 3 yrs.)  Graduates pursue careers including public school regular or special education teacher, child-care teacher or administrator, Head Start teacher or administrator, preschool teacher, family support specialist, developmental therapist, family life specialist, and special needs coordinator.
