Students complete a program that prepares them to apply for licensure in Indiana as Early Childhood Generalist and Exceptional Needs, teaching in pre-kindergarten through grade three. Students develop critical thinking abilities necessary for working with young children and their families. They develop skills for working with typically developing children as well as children with exceptional needs. Graduates are prepared to teach in inclusive preschool and primary classrooms and/or in classrooms serving children with exceptional needs. The program includes one full semester of student teaching.

The Child Development Laboratory School and the Miller Childhood Learning Center are state-of-the-art facilities within the department that are used extensively by undergraduate students for observation, practicum, and student teaching experiences.

Students within the College of Health and Human Sciences can enhance their educational experience through participation in academic organizations such as the Association for the Care of Children's Health, Association for the Education of Young Children, and Council on Family Relations.
