Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
The DVM program encompasses a minimum of six years of study, including two to three years of preprofessional requirements after which students may apply to the four-year professional program. The Veterinary Scholars Program offers early admission to the DVM program for the highest ability high school seniors. Students who are admitted to Purdue University in Biochemistry, Preveterinary Medicine, or Animal Biology in the College of Agriculture or Biological Science in the College of Science are eligible. Students must be in the top 10% of their graduating class with a composite ACT score of at least 28 or a composite SAT score of at least 1950. Applications are available online and must be filed between January 1 and May 1.
Career Opportunities
Graduates pursue careers in private practice in the areas of companion, equine, food, large and/or small animal; public practice in public health and welfare in the military, National Institutes of Health, Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Homeland Security, etc.; and higher education. Internships and residencies allow for specialization in areas such as ophthalmology, cardiology, oncology, surgery, etc.
