Academic Services
Students with disabilities can receive a variety of
support services through the Office of the Dean of Students
Adaptive Programs, which is located in Young Hall (YONG).
To receive services through Adaptive Programs, a student
must schedule an appointment with a program specialist
at Adaptive Programs and supply documentation of the
impairment or condition(s) that substantially impacts
a major life activity, such as walking, seeing, learning,
etc. Upon review of the students medical or diagnostic
documentation and discussion with the student, the program
specialist will determine program eligibility and, if
applicable, recommend accommodations and/or services
that will provide equal access for the student.
Because accommodations are based on the students individual needs, a
comprehensive list of accommodations and/or services is not available. Some
examples of more common accommodations and services are:
- Access to Services and Facilities: text telephones (TTYs), accessible
classroom schedules, computers, and adaptive equipment.
- Access to Class Information: notetaker service, laboratory-assistant
service, interpreter service, real-time reporter service, video-captioning
service, video-captioning service, assistive devices and systems, instructor-provided
adjustments.
- Access to Written Material: audiotaped text format, electronic text
format, brailled text and tactile diagrams, reader service.
- Alternative Testing Conditions: extended time, distraction-limited
test environments, alternative test locations.
- Alternative Testing Methods: reading adjustments (e.g., scribe,
tape recorder, brailled print, enlarged print, oral exam), writing adjustments
(e.g., scribe, tape recorder, computer, oral exam, alternative to "bubble" answer
