February 22, 2008 Appointments, honors and activitiesAppointments and promotions:— Krannert School of Management's doctoral program in economics ranked 31st among the top 58 world departments and 25th among departments in U.S. colleges and universities in a review by faculty at the University of Arizona and Warsaw School of Economics. The review was published in February's Review of Economics and Statistics, published by the president and fellows of Harvard College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Purdue was the only Indiana school that made the ranking, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Stanford University topping the list. The ranking was based on the worth of doctoral programs in economics as reflected in their ability to place their graduates at top-level economics departments or business schools.
Faculty and staff honors: — Gary Bertoline, assistant dean for graduate studies in the College of Technology and professor of computer graphics technology and computer and information technology, authored the fourth edition of "Technical Graphics Communications," published this year by McGraw Hill. Other Purdue authors of the book are Nathan Hartman, assistant professor of computer graphics technology, and Bill Ross, professor of computer graphics technology. — Janet Ayres, Extension specialist in leadership development in the College of Agriculture and professor of agricultural economics received the Friend of Conservation Award. Ayres was recognized for her work with the Indiana Conservation Partnership in developing a statewide leadership development program series specifically designed to enhance the skills of soil and water conservation district supervisors. — Kathy Banks, civil engineering department head, Adriela Fernandez, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, Laura Glitz, women's tennis head coach, Veronica Hirsch, director of the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, Dorothy Reed, assistant provost and Pamella Shaw, assistant provost, were honored Feb. 21 at the eighth annual Mortar Board Women of Purdue Reception. The reception, which welcomes and recognizes distinguished women faculty and administrators at Purdue who have recently been hired or promoted into high-ranking positions, was sponsored by the Barbara Cook Chapter of Mortar Board, a national college senior honor society.
— John Weaver, facility manager at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology. Weaver was recognized for his "numerous publications and significant contributions to the advancement of cleanroom design and construction, particularly in the emerging field of nanotechnology," according to Fredric Fey, Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology president. Weaver will be recognized at ESTECH 2008, the 54th annual technical meeting and exposition of Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology, on May 6 in Bloomingdale, Ill.
Student honors: — The American Counseling Association selected Melissa Combs, a school counseling master's student from LaPorte, Ind., as one of 10 master's level recipients nationally of the Ross Trust Graduate Student Scholarship. This award is given in recognition of stellar academic achievements, commitment to volunteerism and a desire to work in the K-12 educational environment in the future. Combs received a $1,000 scholarship, free student association membership and a complimentary registration to the ACA conference and exposition.
