9/27/96--Purdue astrophysicists and their colleagues at several institutions used this telescope, at the Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins in Arizona, to detect very-high-energy gamma-ray bursts from a galaxy 400 million light-years from Earth. The 10-meter-diameter spherical mirror is made up of many smaller mirrors. Click on photo to download a (878k) JPEG photo.
