10/6/95--The Purdue Bell Tower,a new landmark looming behind the water sculpture fountain at the heart of the Purdue University campus, will be dedicated Oct. 14 as part of Homecoming weekend festivities. Made possible with a leadership gift from Purdue's Class of 1948, the tower is a contemporary interpretation of the old Heavilon Hall Tower, a campus landmark through the first half of the 20th century. Atop the tower are the four century-old bells from the old tower, which were placed in storage when the antiquated facility was razed in 1956. Click on photo above to download a (220k) JPEG photo. 10/6/95--THE BEST BAND IN THE LAND-- Purdue University's "All-American" Marching Band struts its stuff as winner of the most coveted prize awarded to college marching bands. This is the first time the Sudler Trophy has been given to an institution without a school of music. The award is based on the responses of hundreds of NCAA Division I marching band directors across the United States. The 390-member band is also one of the largest in the country.
