11/02-- Nick Carpita, a professor of botany and plant pathology at Purdue University, keeps an eye on a series of mutated Arabidopsis cells suspended in liquid culture in his lab. The cells remain suspended by the oscillating tabletop. Carpita and his research team have received a grant of almost $6 million from the National Science Foundation to investigate the formation, development and growth of plant cell walls.
