April 2, 2003 Purdue summer camp encourages science careers for women WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Young women with an interest in scientific careers can attend Purdue University's Women in Science Programs' ScienceScape camp on July 13-19. The camp is open to students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades this fall. The cost is $350, which includes housing in Purdue residence halls and meals, lab equipment and supplies, a lab and camp memory book, and a parents' luncheon. There also will be a trip to Indianapolis to see an IMAX movie and visit the Indianapolis Science Museum. The camp will provide participants an opportunity to learn science from hands-on experiments supervised by women scientists from many fields. Lunchtime will be spent with a woman scientist who will speak to the students about her career. Students will attend three lab periods daily, and will study subjects ranging from archeology to astronomy with equipment from computers to microscopes. The theme of the camp will be "Pieces of the Puzzle," and in each lab students will solve a mystery by working together as a team. The deadline for applications is April 18.
