Local File Scan Utility
In your Start Menu under All Programs, you have an application called “Local File Scan Utility.”
Student Services Technology and Assessment LAN Expectations require that all user data files be stored on file server drives and not on local workstation drives. Data files stored on the network file server are better secured and back-ups are maintained for business recovery purposes due to disaster or equipment failure. Additionally, it’s each user’s responsibility to be good stewards of University information and ensure all restricted or sensitive data is stored on network drives.
The new Local Scan File Utility will assist you in identifying files stored on your workstation by searching your local hard drive (C:) for certain file types, (Word, Brio, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Outlook, and Comma delimited) and then writing the results to a file that you can review.
This utility will identify a file’s presence; it does not move, remove, or modify any files. You will need to review these results to determine if any files were identified and move them from your workstation to an appropriate network drive location. The scan program will automatically display the results when the scan has completed.
It is recommended that you run this utility immediately after logging in. Running the utility after having been logged in and working all day will report “false” temporary data that is cleaned upon a user log out.
You may run this routine as many times as you like to assist you in being good stewards of University information and identifying files that reside on your workstation.
