Background & Guidelines
Since 1975, Purdue has received research funding through grants made possible from
the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust Fund. The areas of research
eligible for funding, as described by the benefactors, are:
- Air and water pollution research
- Research in the field of biochemistry
- Research for the control and prevention of disease
- Research for development of new technologies in food production
- Research in medical and biophysical instrumentation, including the adaptation of the modern computer in the measurement of biological processes, in the collection, recording, analysis, and interpretation of data.
Also specified in the Will is a directive that no funds may be used to finance any research in psychiatry, sociology or social studies.
We wish to encourage the submission of, and will assign high priority to, interdisciplinary proposals whose focus is establishing new research relationships and new research thrusts. Use of funds is limited to Purdue University. Also important will be high potential to compete for or leverage Federal funding and to create
programs with a life span longer than the one-year Showalter award.Requests to acquire equipment will only be
considered if there is substantial (75%) cost-sharing provided. Finally, due to the nature of projects we wish to identify, proposals up to $75,000 are welcome for consideration. Proposals above this figure will require significant justification.
Due to the highly competitive nature of this selection process, it is strongly advised that if an award is made, all funding be expended within the one-year project period -- July 1 - June 30. However, if there is a need to carry over award funds beyond the initial award period, the awardee will be allowed a one (1) year extension after routing (internally only) a brief progress report and justification for the carry-over. Most awardees should be able to utilize the funds in a two (2) year period. Exceptional circumstances will be required for extensions beyond the two year period and will be reviewed on an 'as requested' basis. Also, if a funded investigator leaves the university during an approved funding period, the non-expended funds may be transferred to another qualified Purdue investigator, provided a brief progress report and justification are submitted.

Submission Procedures - General
Proposals for funding from the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Research Trust will be reviewed in two stages by an internal selection committee [ISC] at Purdue. The ISC is appointed on an annual basis by the Vice President for Research and is comprised of distinguished faculty representing individual academic units within the Purdue system. An initial review will select the most meritorious pre-proposals for development of full proposals and ranking. The ISC will review and compile a ranking of full proposals, which will be presented to the Showalter Trustees. In some cases, the ISC may elect to send a subset of the full proposals to the trustees. The Showalter Trustees will make the final selection of projects to be funded.

Academic deans are asked to submit brief (1-2 page) pre-proposal recommendations of research projects from their school/area along with a prioritized listing of the pre-proposals in spreadsheet format – Click here for Spreadsheet.
Pre-proposals should be single-spaced and limited to one to two (1-2) pages in length. At the top of the first page, please include the full name and department of each researcher involved in the project. The principal researcher should be listed first. Click here for Abstract Model
In addition to the one to two page pre-proposal, please also include -
A) a separate, short (one to two page) curriculum vitae for each investigator that includes not only relevant recent publications but all current and pending support. Each grant or proposal should be listed as follows:
Name of PI/s; Department/School; School/College
State whether Active (A) or Pending (P); Agency and Agency Number (if applicable)
Complete Title of Grant or Proposal
Start and end dates of all years
Current year direct costs
Sample [fictional]:
SMITH, John; Pharmacy Practice; Pharmacy
"Inhibiting Proteases Involved in Arthritis"
09/01/04-08/31/07
$250,000
and
B) an Outline Budget that will give the evaluation committee an idea of how the money will be used. This does not have to be submitted through your business office at this stage.
Sample:

Full-Proposal Submission
Investigators should work directly with their departmental/institutional business offices to develop and submit their full proposals. Complete full proposal applications (hard copy) for Showalter funding must be sent to Rhonda Hostetter VPR- Room 330/HOVD, by noon on Monday, March 3rd, 2008.

Focus on a clear identification of the problem, the general approach, and the benefits anticipated from the results.
- A one-page “Technical Summary” that is closer to the kind of abstract that you would write to a federal sponsor.
- A brief but carefully developed scientific proposal, which does not exceed five [5] double-spaced pages, uses one-inch margins and font point sizes no smaller than NIH guidelines allow, and includes "Nature of the Problem," "Objectives," "Procedures.”
- The same curriculum vitae & recent publication with all current & pending as submitted at pre-proposal stage:
A Separate, short (one to two page) curriculum vitae for each investigator that includes not only relevant recent publication but all current and pending support. Each grant or proposal should be listed as follows--
