Clifford Kinley Trust

Schedule

  • Annual announcement is sent to academic deans in December.
  • Pre-proposals are due in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), from your academic college / school dean, by the end of January (31st).
  • An Internal Selection Committee (ISC) will meet and screen all pre-proposals.
  • Full-proposal requests will be sent to selected faculty mid February.
  • Full proposal submissions are due by NOON on the forth Monday in April.
  • The Selection Committee meets in May to make award decisions.

Background & Guidelines
The Kinley Trust was established in 1978 to fund research relating to human welfare and was activated in 1991 upon Mrs. Kinley's death. The competition is exclusive to the West Lafayette campus. The Kinley competition is limited to faculty principal investigators (PIs). This endowment was established to fund research which uses a social science perspective to explore methods for improving the human condition.

Project Selection & Funding
The selection committee generally recommends funding individual projects with a maximum budget of $20,000. Projects are selected which use a social science perspective to explore methods for improving the human condition. Successful proposals stand alone as independent projects (not a dependent component of a larger program), are grounded in theory, have a clear relationship to the literature, and fully describe the methodology.

Kinley Trust Selection Committee
The Selection Committee is appointed by the Assistant Vice President for Research and consists of faculty members, two-thirds from the basic sciences and one-third from social/behavioral sciences, as specified in the Trust.

Nominations
A request for nominations is solicited from each academic dean. The deans identify potential projects for funding from within their respective colleges / schools.

Pre-Proposal Submission Requirements
One hard copy of each pre-proposal should be submitted to the OVPR by your academic college / school dean by the end of January (31st).

Academic deans are asked to submit brief (1 page) pre-proposal recommendations of research projects from their college / school along with a prioritized listing of the pre-proposals in spreadsheet format – Click here for Spreadsheet.

All pre-proposals should be:
a.) Be single spaced;
b.) Be formatted with one (1) inch margins on all sides;
c.) Utilize a font no smaller than Times New Roman or Arial 11;
d.) Be one (1) page in length; and
e.) At top of the page, include the full name and department of each researcher involved in the project with the principal researcher listed first.

Descriptions longer than one page or deviations from the above formal specifications are rejected. Also, references are not allowed.

The prioritized recommendations must be received in the OVPR, Hovde Hall, Room 330, by the end of January. A copy of the prioritized spreadsheet must also be sent, via email, to rhostett@purdue.edu by the end of January.

Invitations to submit full-proposals will be sent to selected faculty first week of April.
