2003 Summer Faculty Grant Application Form

About 40 PRF Summer Faculty Grants (PRF/SFG) will be awarded by the Purdue Research Foundation each year. Summer Faculty Grant awards enable successful applicants to continue full-time scholarly work during the summer and may not be held concurrently with any other appointment.

ELIGIBILITY

The awards are for full-time, tenure-track, academic year faculty members, who will be in residence in the following academic year (example: Fall 2003 - Spring 2004), and are in the early stages of their careers. Qualified applicants must fall into one of the three categories listed below:

  1. untenured instructor;
  2. untenured assistant or associate professor;
  3. assistant or associate professor who obtained tenure no more than three years prior to the summer for which they are requesting support.
Applicants should have received not more than one previous Summer Faculty Grant.

APPLICATION

The application may not exceed five double-spaced pages and should contain the following sections: abstract; statement of the problem; significance of the problem; a plan of research. Also include a vitae of not more than two pages. Projects for the development of a course or teaching laboratory are not eligible. Proposals should be written in terms appropriate for reviewers who are familiar with the general area of the proposed research but whose expertise may not specifically coincide with the topic of the proposal.

The application cover page contains a check-off list for research involving animals, humans, and/or recombinant DNA (r-DNA). If your plan of research requires the use of animals, humans, and/or r-DNA you must indicate this by checking the appropriate space on the application cover page.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Proposals should be submitted to the academic dean of the school. The dean will then refer all proposals received to a committee of faculty from the school for evaluation. The number of copies required varies with the particular school. There are no format requirements except that the Application form must be used as the cover page.

Academic deans will notify faculty members of their internal deadline and application procedures. Applications are due, via the dean’s office, in the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research by Friday, January 10, 2003.

Announcements of the awards will be made in March 2003.

EVALUATION

The proposals will be evaluated by a committee of faculty from your school who are appointed by your academic dean. Each school committee is free to develop an evaluation procedure which they feel is appropriate. Some committees may function as a committee-of-the-whole when the evaluations are made. Other committees may ask each committee member to rank and rate each proposal. Each committee member's results will then be tabulated by a chairperson to reach the committee's evaluation. Other procedures that are agreeable to the school committee may be followed.

The committee will be requested to rank the proposals in relative order of preference (1 for the highest ranked) and also to rate each proposal as excellent, very good, satisfactory or unsatisfactory. School committees will be asked to base their evaluation on scholarly merit as well as the promise of contribution to the field and the growth of the scholar. All proposals and rankings are then transmitted to the academic dean who forwards them to the Vice President for Research.

Among applications of equal merit, preference will be given to those applicants who have not had previous Summer Faculty Grant awards.

SALARY and SUPPLEMENTATION

A PRF/SFG recipient receives a salary of $7,000 (less taxes) for two summer months (8-weeks) of employment which supports the work outlined in their proposal. The recipient may not hold another appointment during the 8-week grant period.

The Vice Provost for Research (VPR) business office prepares and processes all payroll documents for the salary payment to the PRF/SFG recipient. Customarily, faculty awarded Summer Faculty Grants can expect receipt of their funds (either by check or direct deposit) during the second pay period of the summer payroll schedule. The exact pay date can be obtained from their departmental business office. In the event this pay period conflicts with other employment during Maymester, the departmental business office will need to communicate with the VPR business office so payment can be delayed to a future pay period but no later than the fourth pay period of the summer payroll schedule. Payment past the fourth pay period will not meet the 8-week work requirement.

SUPPLEMENTATION DURING THE PRF/SFG PERIOD

While the PRF/SFG provides salary for two summer months (8 weeks) of employment, this amount may not be equivalent to the normal salary the recipient would receive for that time period. The academic department may supplement the Grant up to the equivalent (100% salary) that could have been received for two summer months of employment under the Guidelines for Summer Session Support issued by Provost Mason. The Grant may be supplemented during the eight week Grant period with the use of unrestricted gift funds ONLY. The use of general funds or other sponsored research funds is not allowable. If the academic department chooses to supplement the Grant, this supplement must support the purpose for which the Grant was received and does not represent additional assignments.

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OUTSIDE THE PRF/SFG GRANT PERIOD

Summer appointments before or after the grant period are allowable subject to the summer session support guidelines relevant to the funding source of the appointment. Refer to the Guidelines for Summer Support issued by the Provost to determine the impact of the receipt of the Grant and any supplement on the total amount the recipient can earn during the summer session.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

If your research involves the use of animals, humans, and/or r-DNA, all appropriate approvals must be obtained prior to distribution of Summer Faculty Grant funds. Funds cannot be awarded retroactive to the university approvals.
