Research office. PLEASE NOTE: FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY! NOT TO BE USED FOR INDIVIDUAL FACULTY SUBMISSION.
Applications from school/regional campus are due no later than Friday, January 10,
2003.
ELIGIBILITY
All faculty members who supervise Ph.D. research (P or P* Graduate School certification) are eligible to
apply for a grant. Normally, a professor may not hold two PRF Research Grants simultaneously. In view of
the competitive nature of the grant, if the faculty member awarded the grant leaves Purdue, transfer of
the grant to another project director will be approved only in exceptional cases.
APPLICATION
The proposal for a PRF Research Grant originates with the faculty member who will be supervising the
research. The application (not more than 10 double-spaced pages) should contain a statement of the
problem, the significance of the problem, and the plan of research. Include in the description of the
plan of research any special conditions as to equipment, data collection, supplies, interruptions, etc.
The application cover page contains a check-off list for research involving animals, humans, and/or
recombinant DNA (r-DNA). If your research study requires compliance approvals you must indicate this by
checking the appropriate space on the application cover page. Click here to go to the application cover
page.
Faculty members submit proposals to the department head. The department head then forwards them to a
departmental committee for evaluation. The number of copies required varies with the particular department
and school. There are no format requirements except that the attached form must be used as the cover
page. If a faculty member submits more than one proposal, each proposal should be numbered
(e.g., 1 of 2, 2 of 2, etc.).
Department heads and academic deans will notify faculty members of their internal deadlines . One copy of
each proposal and the dean's ranking must be received in the Vice President for Research office, HOVD by
Friday, January 10,
2003.
EVALUATION
The departmental committee evaluation is based on scholarly merit. Each proposal is ranked in relative
order of preference and also receives a rating of excellent, very good, satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
The ratings are entered on the cover page. The departmental committee submits the rated proposals to the
department head, who ranks them (1, 2, 3, etc.) taking account of the departmental committee's evaluation
of scholarly merit and administrative desirability. All proposals and rankings are then transmitted to
the academic dean. The academic dean establishes the criteria and procedures for the ranking of proposals
in the school except that the relative ranking by the department head may not be changed.
