2003 PRE-PROPOSAL DUE DATE - VIA YOUR SCHOOL DEAN - NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, February 14, 2003. Contact your academic Dean's office for internal school information and deadline dates.

General

The Kinley Trust was established in 1978 to fund research relating to human welfare and was activated in 1991 upon Mrs. Kinley's death. The competition is exclusive to the West Lafayette campus.

Eligibility

The Kinley competition is limited to faculty principal investigators (PIs).

Kinley Trust Selection Committee

The Selection Committee is appointed by the Assistant Vice President for Research and consists of faculty members, two-thirds from the basic sciences and one-third from social/behavioral sciences, as specified in the Trust.

Project Selection & Funding

The selection committee generally recommends funding individual project budgets in the range of $10,000 to $12,000/each. For the 2003 competition, however, we are pleased to announce, that, once again, we will be able to increase our awards to a range of $20,000... Projects are selected which use a social science perspective to explore methods for improving the human condition. Successful proposals stand alone as independent projects (not a dependent component of a larger program), are grounded in theory, have a clear relationship to the literature, and fully describe the methodology.

Competition Initiation

Initiation of the competition occurs in November.

Nominations

A request for nominations is solicited from each academic dean. The deans then identifies potential projects for funding from within their respective schools. A letter of intent (one page) identifying each project to be considered is sent from the respective dean to the Kinley Trust Selection Committee.

Pre-Proposal Submission Requirements

Those interested in applying are required to submit to their academic dean...

A brief (1 page) abstract of the research project they wish to have considered by the Kinley Trust Selection Committee. All abstracts need to follow these guidelines:
  • Be single spaced;
  • Be formatted with one (1) inch margins on all sides;
  • Utilize a font no smaller than 12 pitch;
  • Be one (1) page in length; and
  • At top of the page, include the full name and department of each researcher involved in the project with the principal researcher listed first.
Descriptions longer than one page or deviations from the above formal specifications are rejected. Also, references are not allowed.

Kinley Committee Meeting

The Kinley Trust Selection Committee meets in February to review pre-proposals and determine which investigators will be asked to submit full proposals. The committee responds directly to those investigators whose projects appear to offer the most promise.

Kinley Trust Selection Committee Meeting Dates

Full Proposal Submissions

Full proposals are due sometime mid-April. Those contacted to submit full proposals are asked for a more complete proposal that includes a statement of the problem, the significance of the problem, the plan of research, a budget, and a brief biography of the investigator. Projects selected for funding are from these latter, more complete proposals. Full proposal submissions, include the standard graduate fee remission in the budget. The indirect cost rate is 20 percent of the total of salary and wages, fringe benefits, and supplies and expenses. Final award decisions are made by the end of April.
