Don't forget! You need to do a survey after every use of radioactive material. Don't forget to survey the floors and benches as well as yourself after doing any experiments using radioisotopes. Keep your survey records in a notebook or on a clipboard somewhere where it is easy to find. Don't forget! Take that beta cap off the end of your survey meter. That plastic cap on your meter is a beta shield. It shields betas to help distinguish between beta and gamma contamination. If you are using betas, which most of you are, leaving that cap on will greatly reduce the effectiveness of your meter. Don't forget! If you are using H-3 don't forget to take swipes. Your meter will not pick it up so it is necessary to take swipes and run them through the liquid scintillation counter. Don't forget! Call REM immediately if you have a spill or detect significant contamination during any of your surveys. It is imperative that you notify us as soon as a problem is detected. We are here to help and avoid emergencies. |
