Slip-Trip-Fall Proactive Injury Reduction Workgroup

Slip Trip Fall Call Flyer

In May 2009, REM and Staff Benefits began a new program to proactively prevent workplace injuries. Since then, REM has been developing and implementing the beginning elements of Purdue's Preventive Injury Program. One of the important initiatives is a Slip-Trip-Fall Injury Reduction Workgroup.

At Purdue over the past 10 years, injuries caused by a slip, trip or fall account for 20% of all worker compensation claims and have cost $5,000,000 in claims alone. Additionally, these injuries are among the highest in severity.

Goals of the Workgroup:

  • Evaluation of unsafe surface conditions.
  • Development of proactive Slip-Trip-Fall Injury Reduction program.
  • Elimination of Slip-Trip-Fall injuries in Purdue University.

Active Participants:

  • Gary Evans, Terry Ashlock, Jim Knapp, Tamm Hoggatt, Dan Van Hoosier, Steve Gauger, Elena Cool

Proactive Projects:

  • Design and distribution of "Slip-Trip-Fall - Call" magnets to promote individual stewardship and encourage personal initiative to make campus safer.
  • Publishing interview with Gary Evans on Grounds response to unsafe conditions.
  • Investigating design specification and construction oversight of new paver installations.
  • Using winter time PPE to increase snow and ice traction.
  • Publishing articles to promote safe behavior and best practices among Purdue University employees.
  • Conducting floor slip-resistance tests in University Residences Dining Hall kitchens to evaluate causes of slips, trips and falls in kitchens and develop control solutions.

Expectations:

  • More engaged community will report unsafe surface conditions.
  • Outdoor hazard ground conditions will be eliminated before causing an injury to a Purdue University employee, student, or visitor.
  • Indoor hazard surface conditions will be addressed promptly.
  • Number of incidents caused by slip, trip and fall due-to unsafe surface conditions will be decreased.
