Our annual Black Tie Dinner is a completely student run event that occurs on April 1, 2017 this year. Because of the nature, we need to train our volunteers how to participate in the 24 karat service style that this event is known for. We also need to train them on proper wine service and our culinary team needs proper kitchen and knife training. These volunteer practices occur once a week, on Sundays, so we can get all of our volunteers together at the same time to train them all as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Online Student Sustainability Summit

February 11, 2017 | 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, the Purdue Student Sustainability Council (PSSC) will be hosting a virtual sustainability summit through a platform called WebEx, lasting approximately 2.5 hours. The goal of this event is to engage students and student organizations across the country who have an interest in creating a more sustainable world. One goal we hope to achieve through this summit is to create a network of sustainability oriented organizations that spans across the country and even the globe. This network would allow for cooperation between college and universities that will help to advance the sustainability practices of individual students, student campuses, and, hopefully, the world as a whole. It would provide building blocks for up-and-coming sustainability groups, expand sustainability practices across the country by providing participants with the ability to learn about sustainability solutions that they had previously never considered, and provide students with a group that could encourage and inspire one another to strive further than they ever thought possible.

Considering the fact that the vast majority of attendees will be students already interested in sustainability, the five sections of the summit will focus on how to engage others in sustainability and how to maintain a large sustainability initiative. The summit will begin with a keynote – this person will address inspiring others to live sustainably and how to teach others ways to easily and efficiently live more sustainably. Following the keynote, a panel will discuss the ways in which a student organization can engage and encourage sustainability practices both on a college campus and at home, whether home is a dorm, apartment, house, etc. From here, the students will be broken up into smaller groups, each containing students from several different campuses but with similar goals for their organization, campus, or personal growth in sustainability. During these breakout sessions, students will get a chance to share what sustainability events and practices are and are not working at their individual college or university. Providing others with examples to learn from. Following the breakout sessions, a final speaker will present on how to maintain and benefit from a national network, especially in a setting as fluid and dynamic as an academic institution. Finally, the summit will conclude with some basic logistics about the network we will have created along with a challenge to keep improving and growing sustainability practices across the country.

Writing and Revising a Constitution

February 15, 2017 | 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Have you read your student organization's constitution lately? Your constitution is the primary document that governs how your organization is able to operate. If your constitution has not been reviewed in the last few years, now may be a good time to look it over and make any necessary changes.

This workshop will discuss the various functions and parts of a student organization constitution and give tips about how to frame your constitution to make your organization run more smoothly. There will also be time for questions and answers as part of the workshop.

On a campus as large as Purdue, it can be difficult to know everyone. That is even true for people in the rare position of being leaders of student organizations. Some of the best events on campus, though, arise from partnerships formed between student organizations who are able to combine resources to make good things happen.

Student organization leaders are invited to this social learning event where they can connect with other student organization leaders and compare ideas about topics related to leadership here on campus and more broadly. Each session will have a different topic and/or guest speaker to drive discussion. Light refreshments will be served.

Harry Belafonte (MLK Keynote Address)

January 17, 2017 | 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Fierce Urgency of Now: Where Do We Go from Here?

Keynote address by Harry Belafonte

With a career in music, film and social activism spanning more than 60 years, Harry
Belafonte has always been an advocate for social change. Though widely known
for his calypso hits “Jump in the Line” and “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O),” his
commitment to social change has been just as enduring.

A close friend of Martin Luther King Jr., Belafonte was heavily involved in the civil
rights movement, participating in King’s March on Washington and donating to the
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He also campaigned to end apartheid
in South Africa; helped to organize the song “We Are the World,” which benefited
famine relief in Africa; and served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

In 2014, Belafonte received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Recently, he founded the Sankofa
Justice & Equity Fund, a nonprofit social justice organization that uses the power
of culture and celebrity in partnership with activism. The organization allows artists
to contribute their talents to build awareness and confront issues that negatively
impact marginalized communities.

AMET is an organization that fosters personal development by allowing members to participate in various technical projects.

Working in a group setting, members utilize existing knowledge and gain new knowledge through hands-on experiences.

Projects taking place in the Spring semester are the following:

Rube Goldberg: Create a complicated machine consisting of many steps to complete a simple task. This year's task is to apply a band-aid! AMET won the regional competition in 2016 and hopes for a repeat this year!

Robotics: Help assemble and program a sumo-bot to compete against other schools.

Smart fountain: Help build a water fountain that flashes lights and shoots water that "dances" to the music - like an equalizer!

Aerospace: Send balloons with cameras and other payloads into near-space.

Pinball: Create a functioning pinball machine that can then be turned into a 200-level, multidisciplinary course.

Cummins engine: A 3D printed Cummins diesel engine project that is currently in need of an experienced Arduino programmer!

All-terrain crew boat: The team is in the early development stages of creating a crew boat that will function on land. Exciting new project that can always use new members!

Please attend the callout on January 17th at 6:00pm in Knoy B019 to learn more about each project and how you can become involved!

Black Tie Dinner Practices Dates

March 05, 2017 | 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Our annual Black Tie Dinner is a completely student run event that occurs on April 1, 2017 this year. Because of the nature, we need to train our volunteers how to participate in the 24 karat service style that this event is known for. We also need to train them on proper wine service and our culinary team needs proper kitchen and knife training. These volunteer practices occur once a week, on Sundays, so we can get all of our volunteers together at the same time to train them all as effectively and efficiently as possible.

LEAN (Leadership and Networking)

January 25, 2017 | 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

On a campus as large as Purdue, it can be difficult to know everyone. That is even true for people in the rare position of being leaders of student organizations. Some of the best events on campus, though, arise from partnerships formed between student organizations who are able to combine resources to make good things happen.

Student organization leaders are invited to this social learning event where they can connect with other student organization leaders and compare ideas about topics related to leadership here on campus and more broadly. Each session will have a different topic and/or guest speaker to drive discussion. Light refreshments will be served.

BUILD Purdue Leadership Dinner

February 27, 2017 | 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Purdue Foundation Student Board is planning to host an etiquette dinner event to train our current members and other Purdue undergraduate students on the importance of etiquette and its role in interacting with distinguished Purdue alumni. Our organization frequently interacts with the Board of Trustees, President’s Council members, and other Purdue faculty in multiple different setting ranging from formal dinners to casual tailgates. We want to provide the opportunity for our members and other Purdue undergraduates to learn from a professional etiquette instructor to prepare them for future professional encounters. We want to be inclusive of other Purdue undergraduates at this dinner as well as to attract those who value the importance of good etiquette and its importance in interacting professionally. We know that every Purdue student will eventually encounter a situation involving proper etiquette, so we want to provide this opportunity for Purdue students to grow professionally. We hope that following the training session, attendees will come out feeling more comfortable and confident in their personal etiquette and that they will represent the Purdue student population with professionalism in their future endeavors.

Black Tie Dinner Practices Dates

February 19, 2017 | 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Our annual Black Tie Dinner is a completely student run event that occurs on April 1, 2017 this year. Because of the nature, we need to train our volunteers how to participate in the 24 karat service style that this event is known for. We also need to train them on proper wine service and our culinary team needs proper kitchen and knife training. These volunteer practices occur once a week, on Sundays, so we can get all of our volunteers together at the same time to train them all as effectively and efficiently as possible.
