PURDUE UNIVERSITY
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
EXECUTIVE MEMORANDUM No. B-60
To: Deans, Directors, and Heads of Schools, Divisions, Departments, and Offices, and Regional Campus Chancellors
Re: Retirement Phase-In for Tenured Faculty
At its meeting on 16 March 1979, the Board of Trustees approved a new policy under which faculty members with tenure who reach the scheduled retirement age of 65 (age 66 for those employed prior to 1 July 1948) between now and 1 July 1982 will be eligible for half-time appointments until they reach age 70.
Normally, the appointment will be for one-half time throughout the year, either academic year or fiscal year based on the individual's present term of employment. However, if it is beneficial to the University, appointments of less than half-time will be considered as well as appointments consisting of one semester with full pay.
Individuals who desire to continue employment must express their intention early in the spring semester each year if they wish to continue the following year. A list of those faculty members recommended for continuation under this policy will be submitted by the President, or his designee, to the Board of Trustees each year.
Staff members who continue employment under the terms of this retirement phase-in will continue to be considered voting members of the faculty until fully retired. Once full-time retirement is elected, subsequent appointments, if any, will be subject to the usual post-retirement review and be approved only if it can be demonstrated that the appointment is to the benefit of the University.
The benefits provided to staff who continue employment will be those stated in Executive Memorandum No. B-36, Staff Benefits for Post-Retirement Appointments, except that coverage under the University's Medical Security Plan or Medicare Supplemental Plan, whichever is applicable, will be continued with the University paying its regular share of the cost.
Questions relating to appointments and benefits under this special retirement phase-in policy should be referred the Department of Staff Benefits, Payroll and Insurance.
