CIP Code - The purpose of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is to provide a taxomonic coding scheme of instructional programs to facilitate the organization, collection and reporting of programs nationwide. CIP was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Educations’ National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 1980. The third revision was released in 2000.
Purdue University receives approval from the Indiana Commission of Higher Education to offer programs within specific CIP codes. Purdue University's methodology is to have general CIP codes so that several programs can fit within a code. Consequently, there may be several programs of study that all share the same CIP code.

Class Section - A Class Section, or Class, consists of one or more Course Sections meeting with the same instructor(s) at a common time.  A class is the actual physical group of students and instructors that meet together, including Course Sections that are conjoined or normally meet with each other as part of an institutional offering, such as honors or regular Course Sections sharing a common lecture.

Cohort - A group of individuals (in this case, students) who went through the same experience or event at the same time. A cohort does not necessarily progress at the same rate.

Common Data Set - The Common Data Set (CDS) provides information on general information, enrollment and persistence, first-time first-year (freshman) admission, transfer admission, academic offerings and policies, student life, annual expenses, financial aid, instructional faculty and class size, and degrees conferred. It represents an effort led by guidebook publishers, with the cooperation of institutional researchers and others, to develop a common set of core questions in a single instrument that will then be used by the publishers to meet most of their information needs. Institutions voluntarily complete the Common Data Set, and some post it on their websites. Note that questions may be modified from year to year, so that the Fall 1997 version may be slightly different than the Fall 1996 version.

Course Section - A Course Section, or Section, is a group of students meeting together with and instructor(s) to complete the requirements of a formal instructional offering identified by a specific subject and course number.

Data Digest - The Data Digest is the official source of West Lafayette data. It provides information on general facts and figures, student data, instruction and student life, faculty and staff data, finance, facilities, and research. The compilation of the Data Digest has organized Purdue University data collection and management at the university level, and can help guide data collection efforts at the school and departmental levels as they begin implementation of their individual strategic plans.

Dual Level Courses - Courses numbered 500-599 that may be taken by either graduate or undergraduate students.

Fiscal Year - A 12-month period running from July 1 through the following June 30. Fiscal years are designated by the year in which the FY ends and not the year the FY begins.

FTE (Full Time Equivalency) - A numerical measure used for reporting purposes.  For example, full-time equivalent students is calculated by summing up total credit hours and dividing by 15 for undergraduate, professional, and certificate students, and by 12 for graduate students for a specified time period.  An FTE employee is defined as effort normally expected of a full-time employee.  It is not defined as a particular course load for faculty nor by clock hours for staff; less than full-time staff FTE for faculty and exempt staff is established by mutual agreement between the supervisor and the staff member.  FTE for non-exempt staff is based on a 40-hour work week.

Graduate Student - A student who holds a bachelor's or first-professional degree, or equivalent, is taking courses at the post-baccalaureate level, and is admitted to a graduate or first-professional program.

IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) -
The core postsecondary education data collection program in the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It was designed to help NCES meet its mandate to report full and complete statistics on the condition of postsecondary education in the United States. It is a single, comprehensive data collection system developed to encompass all institutions and organizations whose primary purpose is to provide postsecondary education. The IPEDS system is built around a series of interrelated surveys to collect institution-level data in such areas as enrollment, program completions, faculty and staff, and financing.
