OEPT Re-Test Policy

At some institutions where ESL is not offered or is limited, liberal retest policies are not uncommon.  In the past, the OEPP had a more liberal retest policy because of the limited amount of space in ENGL 001T.  Fortunately, current levels of support from the Provost's Office now allow the vast majority of students to be quickly placed in 001T.  Our preference, therefore, is for all non-certified students to be enrolled in ENGL 001T, "Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants."

Students completing the course consistent report improvements in their spoken English that positively affect their work as teaching assistants, their graduate studies, and professional development.  A place in ENGL 001T allows students structured English language instructional support that they are unlikely to find elsewhere.  Given the demands of graduate studies at Purdue, it is unreasonable to expect a student to make significant improvements in their spoken English within a single semester, especially in the absence of instructional support.

If a student was ill on testing day or did not have access to test prep materials ahead of time, it may be appropriate to retest.  In these cases, the department should request a retest within 7 days.  Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Students who have been on the waiting list for one year or more will also be allowed to retest.

Students who would like ESL instruction are also encouraged to consider the options listed on our list of Community Resources in ESL
