Día de los Muertos

Rooted in indigenous beliefs, the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holds both a historical richness and a pertinent cultural significance. Each fall semester, the LCC holds a community celebration to commemorate the Día de los Muertos. Many times misconceived as a celebration of death, the Día de los Muertos serves more as a vibrant and colorful celebration of life.

Some of the Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead activities include:

  • Mexican food and pan de muerto
  • Arts and craft stations
  • Traditional and contemporary altar displays
  • Latino music and a festive environment

Please join us at the next Día de los Muertos celebration!

The Latino Cultural Center is looking for individuals, student organizations and community groups interested in building an altar for the seventh annual Día de los Muertos celebration that will take place on October 30, 2009 from 4:00-7:00pm at the YWCA of Greater Lafayette.

Please reserve your space before October 19th at 5:00 p.m.  To reserve your altar space or for additional information, please contact Marisol Uribe at (765) 494-2530, or via e-mail at muribe@purdue.edu

Altar assembly will take place from 2:30 p.m.– 3:30 p.m. in the YWCA gymnasium. Each group will receive a six foot table for set up. Altar break down and clean up will begin at 7:00p.m. that day.

Día de los muertos, or day of the dead, is a celebration with a long and rich history rooted in the indigenous cultures of Mexico. Today with a mixture of indigenous ritual, Catholicism, and pop-culture, the observance of Día de los Muertos is a unique celebration that is an illustration of the flexibility of culture and the importance of holding on to one’s history and roots. Altars can be traditional or contemporary in style. Creativity and individuality is strongly encouraged. The LCC will be providing a table for each request. The individual or organization that has signed up to build the altar must provide all altar materials and supplies.
