| The
Institutional Data Network met for the first time in the Summer of 1999.
The initial charge to the group was to devise a way for the university to
consistently and effectively provide data to both internal and external
constituents. Since there was no one centralized office responsible for
responding to data requests, the need to coordinate and standardize responses
in a unified way was crucial. The IDN was formed to facilitate communication
across the campus, and to ensure that the university has a unified voice
when responding to information requests. Additionally, the IDN serves as
the university coordinating body to provide accurate institutional research
data.
Individuals belonging to the group include subject matter experts, data owners/providers. The group meets under the leadership of the Office of Institutional Research, which was formed in the Fall of 2001 in response to data needs arising from the University Strategic Plan. Professor Rabindra Mukerjea, Director of Strategic Planning and Assessment, is the Executive Sponsor for the IDN. Currently, there are 49 members from 28 offices. See Members section for specifics. An initial major undertaking was the creation and preparation of the 2000-01 Purdue University West Lafayette Data Digest. Published for the first time in January 2001, this summary of quantitative information has been prepared on a annual basis and is available in both paper and web versions. Additionally, the IDN is involved in the submission of major university surveys including the U.S. News and World Report and Peterson’s Guide, maintenance of Purdue’s Common Data Set, and development of a new reporting file for employee data. The IDN also looks for ways in which data may be more effectively and efficiently reported and stored. As the university continues with strategic planning, the IDN has proven integral in meeting the administration's data and data analysis needs. |
