Mechanical Engineering

We are pleased that you are interested in our graduate program! Before you continue with your application please read this entire document to ensure that you meet all deadlines, and satisfy all requirements for admission to Purdue University.

It is important to recognize that satisfying the basic requirements does not guarantee graduate admission. However, failure to satisfy these requirements may lead to denial of admission.

Application Deadlines: Applications and all supporting documentation must be received by the deadlines listed below to be eligible for admission:

Fall Spring Summer
U.S. Citizen January 5 to be considered for funding.
March 31 for admission.
November 1 No Summer Admission
International January 5 to be considered for funding.
March 31 for admission.
September 15 No Summer Admission

To Apply

  • Submit online application through the Graduate School
    www.gradschool.purdue.edu
  • Submit all supporting documents to the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Office (address below)

Supporting Documents (click on the links to learn more)

  • Transcripts: two official copies in sealed envelopes from your institution. Mechanical Engineering will NOT accept unofficial transcripts and/or academic documents uploaded through the online application system for review purposes. You must provide official transcripts and/or academic records at the time of application.
  • Recommendation letters three official letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters must be submitted through the on-line application system. We cannot accept recommendation letters through email. If your recommender must write a paper letter, it must be submitted in a sealed envelope with the writer's signature over the flap.
  • Copy of official diploma of each degree already completed
  • Fellowship Essay: optional, unless you are a US citizen who would like to be eligible for a Fellowship
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Resume
  • GRE: required for all applicants
  • English Proficiency: required for international applicants whose native language is not English

Additional Information

  • Both original language transcripts and English translations are required for international applicants
  • Current master’s students wishing to move to a doctoral degree program in this same graduate program are required to submit a new application.

Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program Admission Requirements

Doctoral Degree Program Basic Requirements:

All Applicants:

  • Undergraduate GPA of admitted students averages approximately 3.60 out of 4.0
  • Completion of Master's degree (except when applying for Direct PhD)
  • Master's GPA of admitted students averages: approximately 3.70 out of 4.0
  • GRE average scores of admitted students are approximately:
    • 155 Verbal
    • 162 Quantitative
    • 4.0 Analytical Writing

International Applicants:

  • GRE scores submitted through ETS
    • Institution Code: 1631
    • Department Code: 1502
  • TOEFL scores required for applicants from non-native English speaking countries:
    • Institution Code: 1631
    • Department Code: 68
    • Minimum scores required for admission:
      • Paper Based Test: 575
      • Internet Based Test (IBT) minimums:
        • Total: 77
        • Reading: 19
        • Listening: 14
        • Speaking: 18
        • Writing: 18
      • IELTS minimum of 6.5 is acceptable as an alternative to TOEFL
      • Pearson Test of English (PTE) minimum of 58 is also accepted as an alternative to TOEFL
