Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences

We are pleased with your interest in our graduate program. Before you continue with the electronic application for admission, we wish to ensure that you are familiar with the minimum requirements for admission to graduate degree study in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.  It is important to recognize that although satisfaction of these basic requirements does not guarantee graduate admission, failure to satisfy these requirements may lead to automatic denial of admission.

Supporting Documents: Additional documents are required to support the application. Supporting documents should be mailed directly to the graduate program to which you are applying. Supporting documents include the following, unless specific instructions are noted in the "Completing the Application" section of this page:

  • Transcripts - Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences will accept unofficial transcripts and/or academic documents uploaded through the online application system for initial review purposes as long as they are copies of official transcripts. If personal identifying information, such as a student identification number or social security number appear on the document, REMOVE THIS INFORMATION from your electronic version of your document or mark out the information in black ink before scanning your document. To streamline the process, you are, however, still asked to provide 'official", certified transcripts; see mailing address below.

Completing the Application:

Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose should be a one- to two-page statement describing your professional objectives and your academic and research interests. If possible, the statement should indicate how you see your own research interests overlapping with programs or projects in EAPS. If you have previous research experience, we would like you to write about your experience, and what you accomplished. We are also interested in hearing about any area of your life where you have excelled. Please upload this document into your electronic application.  Do not mail separately.

Recommendation Letters: Please request these be supplied through the electronic application website.

A Master's Degree is not required to obtain a Ph.D.

Current master’s students wishing to move to a doctoral degree program in this same graduate program will not be required to submit a new application.

Master of Science in Education Degree Program 

  • Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average: 
       3.0 or equivalent required
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE): 
       Required -- no minimum score has been set 

International Applicant Requirements:

  • TOEFL for Non-Native English Speakers: 
       Minimum Paper-Based Test (PBT) Score Required: 550
       Minimum Computer-Based Test (CBT) Score Required: 213
       Minimum Internet-Based Test (IBT) Overall Score Required: 77
       With the following minimum section requirements:
       Reading: 19
       Listening: 14
       Speaking: 18
       Writing: 18
       TOEFL score are not required of students who have obtained a Bachelor's degree in the U.S.
  • IELTS (Academic Module):
       An alternative to the TOEFL, scores of 6.5 or higher will be accepted  
  • TWE for Non-Native English Speakers: 
       
    Not required, but recommended 
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic scores
    An alternative to the TOEFL, an overall score of 58 is required for admission

Doctoral Degree Program Basic Requirements

  • Undergraduate and Masters Cumulative Grade Point Average (if M.S. obtained):
