Chemical Engineering

We are pleased with your interest in our graduate program. Before you continue with the electronic application for admission, please read the following information about our basic requirements. Satisfaction of these basic requirements does not guarantee graduate admission. In addition, if your application does not satisfy the basic requirements, it may lead to an automatic denial of admission.

Application Deadlines:  Applications and all supporting documentation must be received on or before the deadlines listed below.

To Apply: Our application process is electronic, and you should submit all materials through the on-line application and have ETS send your GRE (and TOFEL, if applicable) test scores to the Graduate School. If you are recommended by our department for admission to the Graduate School, you will be required to provide official paper documents of your transcripts and, in some cases, your diploma. Failure to produce the required official paper documents after you are recommended to be admitted will result in a withdrawal of our recommendation for admission.

  • Submit an online application through the Graduate School www.gradschool.purdue.edu and pay the application fee.
  • Transcripts - Upload unofficial transcripts into your on-line application for review purposes. International Students: You must provide an English translation of your transcripts, and you must upload the translated transcripts into your on-line application for review purposes. You must also include a copy of the original language transcripts as well. Official transcripts will be required of all prospective students (domestic and international) if you are recommended to be admitted to the Graduate School.
  • GRE Test Take the GRE General Test and request that ETS send official copies of the scores to the Graduate School.
  • English Proficiency If you are an international applicant, take the TOFEL (or equivalent) and request that ETS send official copies of the scores to the Graduate School. Please see below for information.
  • Three Recommendation letters Ask your three recommenders to submit their recommendations electronically. Directions are in the on-line application.
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Diversity Essay (optional)
    Resume (optional)
  • After you have applied, log in to your application periodically to check on the status of your application. We will update your application status through the application process.

Additional Information for International Applicants:

  • Both original language transcripts and English translations are required. Please upload them into your on-line application.

  • No financial statements should be mailed to the ChE Grad Office. If you are accepted to Purdue University and you are an international applicant, the International Students and Scholars office will send you the correct forms to be filled out upon acceptance.

Current master's students wishing to move to a doctoral degree program in this same graduate program will not be required to submit a new application.

Master's Degree Program Basic Requirements

  • Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average:
    3.0 or equivalent required
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE):
    Required -- no minimum score has been set 

International Applicant Requirements: 

  • Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average:

  • TOEFL for Non-Native English Speakers: 
    Minimum Paper-Based Test (PBT) Score Required: 550
    Minimum Internet-Based Test (IBT) Overall Score Required: 77
    With the following minimum section requirements:
    Reading: 19
    Listening: 14
    Speaking: 18
    Writing: 18
  • IELTS (Academic Module):
    An alternative to the TOEFL, scores of 6.5 or higher will be accepted
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic Module):
    An alternative to the TOEFL, scores of 58 or higher will be accepted
  • TWE for Non-Native English Speakers:
    Not required, but recommended

Doctoral Degree Program Basic Requirements
