Mark J. Smith (Dean)

Mark J. T. Smith received the B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology all in electrical engineering. He joined the electrical engineering faculty at Georgia Tech in 1984 and later served as the Executive Assistant to the President of the Institute from 1997 until 2001. In January, 2003, he joined the faculty at Purdue University as Head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Presently he serves as Dean of the Graduate School and holds the Michael J. & Katherine R. Birck endowed professorship.


Dr. Smith is a past Chairman of the IEEE SP Digital Signal Processing Technical Committee in the IEEE Signal Processing Society and a former member of the Board of Governors. He has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on ASSP and as a member of the MIPS Advisory Board of the National Science Foundation. He has been active as a member of the Organizing Committees for the IEEE DSP Workshops, the SPIE VCIP Conferences, and the Defense Applications of Signal Processing Workshops. He is a past President and current board member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA), board member for the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), member of the IEEE Committee on Engineering Accreditation Activities (CEAA), and member of the National Academies Board of Army Science and Technology.
