Unofficial Transcript Upload Tips

You have the option of uploading an unofficial transcript and/or academic document for each institution you have attended. Each institution on the Education Background section that you input will appear on the Transcript/Academic Document Upload section of the application.

All transcripts and/or academic documents uploaded to the online application system are considered unofficial. Unofficial transcript uploads will be utilized for application review purposes only. If the graduate program to which you are applying will accept unofficial transcript for review purposes, you will only need to provide official transcripts and/or academic records at the request of the graduate program or if you are recommended for admission. Official documents should be mailed to the graduate program to which you are applying.

If official transcripts are required, they should be mailed directly from a registrar’s office to the program of application (you can choose to send the transcript to the program yourself, but the transcripts must be in an envelope sealed by the registrar).  The Office of Graduate Admissions also accepts electronic transcripts from accredited U.S. colleges and universities sent via eSCRIP-SAFE, Docufide, Parchment Exchange or directly from the accredited U.S. college and university.  Under a new pilot program, effective August 1, 2014, the Office of Graduate Admissions will also accept electronic transcripts from colleges and universities in India via TrueCopy Credentials or Parchment Exchange.  The transcript must be sent to gradadm@purdue.edu.  The Office of Graduate Admission does not accept electronic transcripts from international colleges or universities except for those noted in the pilot program above.  Transcripts will not be returned.

NOTE: Not all graduate programs will accept unofficial transcripts for review purposes. Some graduate programs require official transcripts and/or academic documents at the time of application review. Please visit the Graduate Program Requirements Web pages to determine if your program of interest will accept unofficial documents for review purposes.

The following tips will assist you in uploading your unofficial transcripts into the online application:

  • The uploaded transcript and/or academic document must be from the original version of the document. An official transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of the issuing institution. If your transcript is not in English, you must upload an English translation certified by the college or university.
  • Transcripts and/or academic documents must include your name and the institution name. If personal identifying information such as a student identification number or social security number appear on the document, either remove this information from your electronic version of your document or mark out the information in black ink before scanning your document.
  • Obtain an electronic version of your transcript or scan a copy of your official transcript. Scan your transcript at the lowest resolution that will result in a legible document (we recommend 200 dpi or less).
  • Scanning documents in color is not necessary. For best results, scan in gray scale or black and white.
  • Make sure the scanned document is fully legible and can be printed on letter size paper (8.5 x 11 inches). This may require you to adjust different settings and sizes of the document.
  • The file cannot exceed 2500 KB in size and should be in .doc, .wpd, .rtf, .xls, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx or .txt format. For Macintosh users, please note that the filename must include the appropriate three- or four-letter extension. Also, please do not attempt to upload a document that is password-protected or that contains macros. This will cause the process to fail.
  • Once you have uploaded your document, click on the View Document button to check the appearance and legibility of your document. The application system will automatically convert your file to PDF format when viewing.
  • Some graduate programs require official transcripts and/or academic documents at the time of application review. Please visit the Graduate Program Requirements Web pages to determine if your program of interest will accept unofficial documents for review purposes. You may be required to submit official transcripts and/or academic documents directly to the graduate program to which you are applying.
  • If you are unable to upload legible documents into the Transcript/Academic Document Upload section of the online application, you will be required to submit official transcripts and/or academic documents to the graduate program to which you are applying.
