| What is the Federal PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)?
The PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note is a multi-year or serial loan feature of the PLUS program. It allows borrowers to receive future Federal PLUS Loans without completing and signing additional promissory notes, as long as the borrower:
- Remains eligible for Federal PLUS Loan*
- Continues to use the same lender for future loans
* To remain eligible the student must meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress guidelines and the borrower must complete appropriate loan request forms.
By signing only one promissory note, the delivery of PLUS loan funds will occur even faster because it eliminates the time it takes for a promissory note to be mailed, completed, and returned to the lender/servicer.
The PLUS Loan MPN Signature Process
Once you have completed a Federal PLUS Loan Request Form and had eligibility PROCESSED BY PURDUE UNIVERSITY for a particular term, the borrower should receive a notification verifying that the PLUS Loan eligibility has been processed. If the borrower has requested a PLUS Loan, but the student has not received notification that eligibility has been processed by Purdue University, borrowers are encouraged to check the status of the loan request at www.ssinfo.purdue.edu.
Once a first-time PLUS Loan borrower has had eligibility certified with the lender, the borrower should be ready to complete an MPN with the lender. If you have questions about this process, contact your lender/servicer. Some lenders provide online electronic signature options, but a paper option is always an option for borrowers.
Sallie Mae PLUS MPN Electronic Signature Process
If a borrower has chosen a Sallie Mae lender and Purdue has processed PLUS loan eligibility, the borrower should be able to electronically sign the note at the PLUS Master Promissory Note on the Sallie Mae website. If a borrower is unable to sign the MPN at this link, one of the following could be the reason:
- The borrower has already completed the initial PLUS MPN and therefore is not required to complete another PLUS MPN.
- The borrower did not go to this page in a timely manner; in these cases the PLUS MPN has already been mailed for completion.
- The borrower may have already accessed the PLUS MPN but did not print the form and request that it be mailed.
- Purdue University processed a PLUS request but the loan was not guaranteed/approved.
- The borrower may have chosen a lender that does not participate in this on-line process and a PLUS MPN application has been mailed along with a set of instructions to help you complete the process.
