| ACADEMIC YEAR 2007-08
To apply for federal, state, and Purdue University student aid programs, you must complete the 2007-08 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be filed annually to be considered for aid annually. You will need 2006 income information. The Purdue University, West Lafayette, Federal School Code is 001825.
WHEN TO FILE
The 2007-08 FAFSA is available as of January 1, 2007. March 1, 2007 was the FAFSA priority filing date for the 2007-08 academic year. Students may file the FAFSA after March 1 and still qualify for most federal aid programs, but will not qualify for need-based financial aid from Purdue. In addition, the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana requires that FAFSA information be received by a March 10 deadline to qualify for most state aid programs.
FAFSA ON THE WEB
The Division of Financial Aid recommends you complete the FAFSA on the Web application via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Internet computers are available at most high schools, local libraries, and the Division of Financial Aid in Schleman Hall, Rooms 302 and 305.
To talk to someone about filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) go to www.fafsa.ed.gov/help/cs.htm and you can chat live with the FAFSA processor.
FAFSA on the Web filing is made easier if students and parents obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education, which can be used as an "electronic signature." Students and parents may obtain a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov . Students/families may still file the FAFSA on the Web without a PIN, but must print and mail a paper signature page to a federal processor. If you have technical questions about FAFSA on the Web, please call (800) 433-3242. The Division of Financial Aid recommends printing the FAFSA on the Web Submission Confirmation page as proof of completion.
Past FAFSA filers have the option of filing the Renewal FAFSA, which uses most of your answers from the FAFSA you filed last year to pre-fill most of the application. Students should receive Renewal FAFSA instructions from the federal processor by December 2007.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
FAFSA information is subject to verification by the Division of Financial Aid, the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI), and others. Do not send the Division of Financial Aid tax forms, business information, or state or federal paperwork unless you are instructed to do so. If information is missing or you are selected for verification, you will be asked to provide additional information. Be sure to respond quickly, accurately, and completely to all requests for additional information.
If SSACI, your home state aid agency, or the Federal Student Aid Program contacts you for further information, you must respond to them directly and promptly.
Admission to Purdue is not required to apply for financial aid. However, you must be admitted to a degree-seeking program (or a teacher's certification program) to receive financial aid. Note: Incoming freshmen who filed the Application for a Preliminary Financial Aid Estimate (PFAE) must also file the FAFSA to qualify for financial aid.
FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION TIMELINE
This timeline is designed to help you complete the financial aid application process. Please read all information carefully and keep for future reference. Note the date each item is completed. Make copies of all forms submitted.
- Complete the FAFSA on the Web (or mail a paper FAFSA) by March 1, 2007, for priority aid consideration. Note the date you submit the FAFSA on the Web by printing the Submission Confirmation page. If mailing a paper FAFSA, obtain a Certificate of Mailing from a U.S. post office.
- After FAFSA submission, you should receive a Federal Student Aid Report (SAR) in about three weeks. This copy is for your review. If all your data is correct, it does not need to be sent to the Division of Financial Aid. If you need to make corrections, you need to follow the instructions included with your SAR.
- Return any verification information requested of you by the Division of Financial Aid or your state agency within three weeks of request.
- Once your financial aid file is considered complete, expect to receive a Financial Aid Eligibility Notice from the Division of Financial Aid listing your eligibility for financial assistance. Incoming freshmen should expect to receive this as early as mid-April.
- Follow instructions mailed with the Financial Aid Eligibility Notice to obtain various types of aid. For example, if you are awarded Federal Stafford Loan or PLUS Loan eligibility, instructions regarding the loan application process will come with your Financial Aid Eligibility Notice. Wait for these instructions BEFORE applying for loan eligibility.
- Return the Financial Aid Eligibility Notice only if you are rejecting financial aid or to report other types of awards you will receive that are not listed (i.e., civic awards, private scholarships, assistantships, counselorships, etc.).
- Indiana residents (if eligible) will receive notification of state aid eligibility from the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (generally by July 1). This copy is for your records and does not need to be sent to the Division of Financial Aid, but be sure it indicates Purdue University, West Lafayette, as your college choice.
- Students who have registered for fall semester classes should expect to receive an invoice from the Office of the bursar by mid-July. Financial aid should be deducted from the amount due on the invoice.
