Level I Courses

Leadout: An Experience in Leadership and Teamwork

This course uses an interactive simulation game, "Leadout, an Experience in Leadership and Teamwork " to demonstrate the value of simulations to improve decision making skills and team functioning. Group development and team building activities are integrated with daily activities throughout the week to demonstrate how individuals function within groups, and how working relations can be improved within the group setting. These sessions help establish expectations for individuals and teams, and provide avenues for discussion and clarification of individual behavior, and decision-making in group settings

Diane M. Winter , 1-3/4 hours
8 - 9:45 a.m., Monday, Shriver MPR BC

Budgets and Accounting: Chips in a Bucket??

Administrators, managers, and leaders of an organization are often asked to establish a budget and be fiscally responsible with the spending of their institution’s funds. This course will introduce participants to financial statements and provide a unique interactive approach to budgets and accounting using chips and a bucket where both the ‘accountant’ and ‘non-accountant’ will gain a greater understanding of budgeting and accounting at your institution.

Diane M. Winter 1-3/4 hours
10 - 11:45 a.m., Monday, Shriver MPR BC

“Already having a Master’s degree in Leadership, I arrived at CMI Level I believing it would be little more than an educational refresher. Boy was I wrong. The sessions are very well organized, timely, and offer great information. Group activities allow participants to form bonds, while working through those barriers that we face working in a group. Advisors treat participants as colleagues, not students, and offer a high level of encouragement throughout the week. A big thanks to Mike Abbott. You are a great advisor!!

CMI Level I offered me a chance to learn and practice new skills in a controlled environment. I flew home very tired at the end of the week, but excited about what I had learned. I can’t wait for the challenge of Level II.”

Charlotte Evans Level I, 2006
Captain, Police Department
University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Facilitating Effective Meetings

Meetings are more effective with advance planning, role clarity, specific goals and careful attention to both the content and process of a meeting. This interactive session will present the toolkit helpful to hold an effective meeting, including helpful ideas for dealing with the various challenges you may encounter.

Margaret Harrington, 1-3/4 hours

Analyzing Financial Statements through Ratio Analysis

Administrators are often asked to interpret financial statements for a governing board, president, vice president, dean, and others who need to make informed decisions. This course allows participants to master approaches to evaluating financial data, using techniques such as trend analysis, comparative financial statements, and ratios--information that will enhance informed decisions.

Joanne Coville, 1-3/4 hours
8 – 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, Shriver MPR BC

Introduction to Strategic Planning

Institutions' leaders build plans for accomplishing strategic objectives that roll down through the organization. When they reach the operational level, it is likely that people, processes, and organizations will need to change in order to alter outcomes as directed by the plan. How does this affect you, and how can you affect it? Institutional planning will be introduced, as well as ways to understand its effect on your operation. Objectives-based reengineering will be examined as a means of improving operations to meet new goals. Participants will also examine the roles and players one needs to enlist for successful change.

Catherine Lilly, 1-3/4 hours
10 - 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, Shriver MPR BC

Budgeting & Strategic Analysis

Once a budget has been set up, managers have to decide what to look for in the budget. What kinds of information should you look for? What should you pay attention to? How do you know something is off course or out of alignment? How do you use the budget, financial reports, and other data to get useful information and insight for decision-making? Analysis is where budget information becomes useful in these ways, and analysis is a question of looking for relationships between numbers. It is a skill that benefits from aptitude but can be learned through practice

David C. Maddox, 1-3/4 hours
1 - 2:45 p.m., Tuesday, Shriver MPR BC

"Although I was apprehensive about attending CMI, the Level I sessions opened my eyes to the value of this program. The knowledge and experiences gained from attending both levels of CMI far exceed the time and expense that are required. I will continue to sponsor several of my staff to attend CMI each year. "

Communicating with IMPACT!

Practical applications include tools for analyzing team effectiveness and communicating with people of diverse styles. Janina Latack, 3-3/4 hours
8 - 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Shriver MPR BC

"Like so many others, I learn best by doing. At CMI, I found myself immediately utilizing the tools we were given at each day's presentations to complete that evening's projects. The design of the program made it an ideal way to both learn practical management and human relation skills and really get to know others and myself through working as a team. "
