(Supersedes Memorandum No. 73)
Long Distance Telephone Calls
Effective Date: 12:01 a.m. 12 January 1965, Purdue University will begin using a new long distance arrangement offered by the General Telephone Company to facilitate the billing of toll charges to departmental budgets. The Purdue Operator will continue to request and record the account number to be charged the same as in the past but in accordance with the change will pass a serial identification number to the Long Distance Operator.
HOW TO MAKE A LONG DISTANCE CALL
- When Calling From A Campus Telephone
- Procedure
- Call the Purdue Operator
- From a Purdue PABX 92 business telephone, dial 1.
- From a Union Building 90 business telephone, lift the receiver, do not dial.
- The Purdue Operator will request the caller's departmental account number for billing purposes. The account number must be complete, including a project number, if applicable, and the proper terminal digit. The Purdue Operator will connect the Long Distance Operator and pass the serial number explained above.
- The Long Distance Operator will request from the caller the necessary additional information to complete the call. The caller will remain on the line until the call is completed.
- Personal Calls
Long distance calls may not be made and charged to University telephones except from the Union Club rooms and certain other telephones as may be specifically approved by the Assistant Comptroller - Physical Plant. Whenever it is necessary to place a personal long distance telephone call from a University telephone, the caller should request that the Purdue Operator place it collect or charge it to the caller's home telephone number.
- Telephone Numbers
Those persons who make frequent long distance calls are requested to maintain a directory of the numbers they call regularly in order to eliminate the need of information service in called cities.
- When Calling To A Campus Telephone
- Prepaid
To make a long distance call prepaid to a telephone at the University, give the complete telephone number to the Long Distance Operator exactly as it appears in the Directory.
- To make a long distance call collect to a telephone at the University, use the prefix 90 instead of 92. For instance, if the number in the Directory is 92-2400, call Lafayette 90-2400. This will automatically route the call to the Purdue Operator. All staff members are urged to call collect when calling to a campus telephone.
- When Calling From A Home Telephone On University Business
- Procedure
- To make a long distance call from a home telephone on University business, call the Purdue Operator, dial 90, and request long distance service.
- The Purdue Operator will request the caller's account number and proceed with the call the same as if the caller were on campus.
- The Long Distance Operator cannot accept the call direct; it must be handled through the Purdue Operator.
BILLING PROCEDURE FOR TELEPHONE CHARGES
Each account will be billed on a monthly basis and such billing will appear on the budget statement.
For each month's charges, a listing will be sent to the department listing the individual charges for each call with the following information:
- Billing serial number
- Date of the call
- City called
- Person or number called
- Charge for the call
When this listing is received, it should be reviewed immediately. Any question about these charges should be referred within five (5) days after receiving the list to the telephone billing clerk in the Physical Plant. If no questions are raised, the charges will be considered proper and will be posted as a single total charge on the next budget statement. Any incorrect charges, not corrected before original posting, will be corrected on the following budget statement.
The above billing procedure does not apply to the 08 accounts or the Residence Halls, They will be billed as in the past.
