Re: BUSINESS OFFICE MEMORANDUM NO. 56

Operating Policy Change at Central Machine Shop

Because of the sharply reduced work-load at the Central Machine Shop, the personnel there have not been able to earn their way. Several transfers of machinists to other University departments have been made in an effort to economize. There appears to be no immediate prospect of an upturn in the type of work once sent there so a change of operating policy is indicated.

In addition to maintaining a reduced force to accomplish all type s of machine work for University departments as in the past, we are expanding the service to permit qualified machinists in the employ of other University departments to use the machines and tools of the Central Shop. This policy should accomplish at least two things:

  1. Make more effective use of the versatile equipment at the Central Shop.
  2. Make almost unnecessary any future additions and replacements of similar equipment in departmental shops.

The enclosed card outlines the general operating procedure and describes most of the equipment.

While this policy should permit wider use of present departmental personnel, it is not expected that additional departmental personnel will be required. Consideration for additional machinist personnel, because of increased future work-load in any area, will be given first to the Central Machine Shop.

An advisory committee has volunteered to serve with Mr. W. S. Fletemeyer on matters of policy. The committee includes Dean G. A. Hawkins, Professor C. D. Lascoe and Mr. R. T. Hamilton.

The new arrangement is effective immediately. If there are any questions, please call Mr. Fletemeyer at 92-2791.
