OFFICE OF THE BUSINESS MANAGER AND ASSISTANT TREASURER
WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA 47907
May 18, 1955
To: Participating Members of the TIAA Retirement System
Re: BUSINESS OFFICE MEMORANDUM NO. 40
TIAA and Social Security
On 26 April you were notified of a referendum to be held 5 August 1955 on the question of inclusion under Social Security of service in positions covered by the TIAA Retirement System.
Only those individuals actively participating (contributing) in the TIAA retirement system on both dates, and who are non-participants in the Federal Civil Service Retirement System on 5 August, will be eligible to vote in the referendum. Staff members contributing on a ten-installment basis will be considered active participants, even though contributions are not made during the summer, except in the case of those resigning or retiring prior to 5 August.
Because of vacations, employment at off-campus centers, and other reasons, many eligible voters will be unable to vote in person at the appointed time and place. Each such person should make written request for a Mail Ballot. In making that request, the enclosed card should be used. Be sure to sign the card and show the address to which the Mail Ballot should be sent. Send the card in the enclosed envelope to Mr. F. C. Hockema, Secretary, The Board of Trustees of Purdue University, Room 203, Executive Building, West Lafayette, Indiana. Requests for mail ballots must be received by the Board of Trustees not less than 30 days prior to 5 August 1955, the date specified for holding the referendum. A Mail Ballot and instructions for voting will be sent to you, immediately following receipt of your request.
Each eligible employee is urged to vote - in person or by mail - so there will be a complete expression of preferences. Failure to vote is an automatic negative vote. If there is a possibility that you will be unable to vote in person at the appointed time and place, a Mail Ballot should be requested and voted in accordance with instructions to be enclosed with each Mail Ballot.
