Re: Naming of Rooms or Areas within Buildings on the Purdue Campuses

As the result of greater efforts in securing private donations in the form of money and/or equipment of various kinds, there has been an increased interest in naming rooms or areas within buildings for significant donors. Furthermore, interest is occasionally expressed in giving similar recognition (e.g., a named gallery, laboratory, etc.) to individuals who have given outstanding service to the University or who have made significant scholarly contributions to a field of study. This memo, therefore, sets forth the process to be used and the minimum levels of gifts required to gain approval for such recognition.

General Recognition Guidelines:

  1. Donors who have provided at least one-half, but not less than $100,000 of the funding for equipping and/or renovating rooms or areas within buildings may be given opportunities to have their names attached to such areas.

  2. Donors who have provided a minimum of $100,000 in private gift support to a school, division, or department (and who have not had this support recognized through another naming opportunity) may be recommended to have their names attached to a room or area within a facility.

  3. Schools, departments, and divisions may recommend naming rooms or areas for individuals who have provided outstanding service to the University.

In all cases, the approval process described below must be followed.

Approval Process:

It is expected that organizational units will normally make recommendations for naming rooms and areas assigned to them. Such recommendations, along with justifications and explanatory materials, should be forwarded by the department head through the organizational structure to the President for final action. In the event that the area involved is assigned to another organizational unit, or is a public area such as a building lobby, hallway alcove, etc., comments and concurrences from heads of the other organizational unit or the departments occupying the building shall be included in the submission materials. At no time should promises or commitments be made in advance of a final approval by the President.

Once final approval has been obtained, the donor may need to be consulted to secure approval for naming the room or area. This is especially important for corporations and foundations.

Upon approval by the President, an appropriate plaque may be installed in the room or area. At the West Lafayette Campus, plaques should be ordered through Physical Plant by submitting a P59-1, Request for Estimate, to the Facilities Planning Department. At the Regional Campuses, plaques should be obtained through normal channels. All costs will be the responsibility of the organizational unit originating the request.
