Re: Lost and Found Service

Through the efforts of Student Government and several staff committees, Purdue University (West Lafayette) has inaugurated a central Lost and Found Service. Although the University Police Department will have the responsibility for centralized processing, I encourage your cooperation to insure an efficient, effective and continuing program.

This new service is intended to replace many independent, but previously necessary, departmental lost and found operations.

General operating procedures are listed below:

  1. Anyone finding an article of unknown ownership inside a University building should turn it into the Building Deputy (Residence Hall Manager, etc.) who will attach a tag to the article and provide the finder with a receipt. The receipt states that the finder may claim the article after a six-month waiting period, but before seven months elapse. The Building Deputy will forward one part of the tag to the Police Department for informational purposes. He then retains the article for one week at which time it will be picked up by the Police Department (articles of high value will be promptly picked up upon request).

  2. Anyone finding an article of unknown ownership outside a University building is encouraged to turn it into the Police Department although he can turn it into the nearest Building Deputy. Again, a receipt will be provided to the finder.

  3. Losers may file loss reports with the Police Department either by mail or in person at any hour of the day or night on forms provided for this purpose.

  4. The Police Department will maintain cross-referenced files and conduct any necessary investigation to determine the rightful owner of found articles.

  5. Notices will be posted in major campus buildings briefly explaining the lost and found service and directing inquiries to a particular location in that building.

  6. After elimination of articles which suffer certain legal restrictions (contraband, liquor, etc.), all other unclaimed articles, after satisfying the required waiting period, will be turned over to Property Accounting for sale or disposal.

  7. Any department that presently has an accumulation of "found" articles should contact the University Police Department for pick-up service.

Specific procedural directions for Building Deputies and others in similar positions will be forthcoming under separate mailing from the University Police Department.
