In Remembrance of Sept.11, 2001: "I Am An
American"
We
at Purdue University Bands encourage our alumni and friends around the world
to fly their American flag in memory of lives lost on Sept. 11, and in resolve
that the United States of America will continue as the greatest country on earth.
If you plan to join the Boilermaker football team and the "All-American" Marching
Band at Ross-Ade Stadium this fall, we know Roy Johnson's presentation of "I
Am An American" will have added meaning. We hope you will raise your voice to
join him in punctuating the final statement with courage and pride - "I AM AN
AMERICAN." If you are at home, we invite you to incorporate this 35-year-old
Purdue Band tradition in your football parties or other gatherings as appropriate:
I am an American. That's the way most of us put it, just matter of factly. They are plain words, those four. You could write them on your thumbnail, or you could sweep them clear across this bright autumn sky. But remember too that they are more than words. They are a way of life. So whenever you speak them, speak them firmly; speak them proudly; speak them gratefully. I AM AN AMERICAN.
(Purdue Director of Bands Emeritus Al G. Wright wrote and introduced "I Am An American" into pregame football ceremonies at Purdue University in 1966.)
