DETAILS ON APPLYING FOR A LEATH SCHOLARSHIP

Wilbur T. Leath, a former bandsman from Fountain County, Ind., left Purdue University Bands a trust fund for the purpose of providing scholarships for students in the band and orchestra. The scholarships - valued at $1,000 - are available to incoming Purdue students for the period of one year and carry the following criteria:

The recipient:

  • Must be an Indiana resident
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student
  • Must be enrolled in an assigned ensemble as an instrumental musician
  • Must complete a successful academic review based on GPA, class rank, and SAT score
  • Must participate in an audition process

Auditions are held on one Saturday in February. (Check with the office 765-494-0770 for upcoming dates). Application forms, which can be downloaded from this site, should be returned to the Bands office by mid January of the year that you plan to enter Purdue. Audition slots are assigned on a first-come basis; requests will be honored in order of application.

Audition material should include two two-octave major scales and a prepared selection from the ISSMA group I solo list. Jazz students should request audition materials from Purdue University (765-494-0770) to perform in addition to the group I solo. (Time limit: 6 minutes) Piano accompaniment will not be allowed. Students will also be asked to sight-read. Awards are announced by the end of April each year.
